| Mission m73 or m74? Help Please | ckronengold Jul 23, 2002 9:53 AM | | I'm going to be ordering a set of the mission m73 or m74s, along with the matching C2 center channel.
My question is which to pick? I was pretty much going to get the m74s, but a few people have started telling me tales of the "magic" in the m73s.
Now I know that sometimes just the right combination of drivers, crossovers, cabinetry, etc will make a speaker shine compared to its brothers and sisters in its line, and sound way better than it deserves to. Has anyone heard these speakers and have any input? All is welcome.

I have owned the M73s for several months and really like them, especially for their ability to bring a singer into the room on a well-recorded CD. Their imaging is also terrific. The tweeter is wonderful with well-recorded material. The Brits rave about the bass of these things, but I much prefer them with a powered sub. I have heard that the m74 is considerably stronger in the bass end, but if you intend to support them with a sub, that won't be an issue. Personally I'd go with M73s and a sub. |

They have plenty bass, but with the typical "hump" that makes smallish speakers sound bigger. The top end is rolled off and they are fairly efficient, making them suitable for use with cheap receivers, but Mission's biggest problem is the placement of the bass port directly behind the woofer, causing a lot of midrange to exit the rear of the box and color the sound.
This is a cheap series (M70 series) of speakers and does not compare to their more expensive offerings. If you like the laid back sound quality, try the Wharfedale Diamond 8 series... Comparable price, some audiophile qualities, and MUCH better build quality. |
