| Lower-end help: AR PS2262 vs Polk R30 or Polk R40 | milaz001 Jul 24, 2002 10:35 AM | | I'm looking for a pair of tower speakers in the sub-$350 range and have stumbled across good deals on the AR PS2262s and the Polk R30s and R40s? Any preference between AR and Polk? Major performance differences? Other considerations? If the Polk's are the answer, any preference between the R30 and R40s? Any help appreciated in advance... -milaz001 |
| Check out some Wharfedales and some other suggestions | WStan Jul 24, 2002 11:26 AM | | You can get a new pair of Wharfedale Emerald EM-97's or maybe even the EM-99's within your price range, including S&H, on E-bay. They have been very well rated in the reviews here.
If you decide on the AR's, check out U-bid.com. I've seen that model go for a fairly reasonable price (maybe $49-69/speaker) and if you just focus on the total of the bill, rather than on the S&H overcharge, they are a good deal indeed. U-bid had for several years a truly horrible reputation for bad customer service, but the last several items I've bought from them, since March, have all arrived very quickly - in just four to five days and I've been really satisfied with the price (knock on wood - I just won an auction for a new sub from them last night).
Don't know if they have the deal anymore, but tweeter.com had an excellent price on the very good Mirage FRX-5 floorstander some months back for $300, including S&H (MSRP $550). That speaker does not have the most boomy bass, but it does go fairly deep for the price range and it is very controlled in the lower frequencies. It's a very laid back and mellow speaker, that could be a love/hate kind of thing (more likely hate if you wanted to play rap, metal or hardcore), but I think it would tend to grow on the listener and be more satisfying the more you played it. |

Sells for $350 - you can buy them online direct from the company, as well as through audioadvisor and amazon. Another option is Axiom M40s from their factory outlet (axiomaudio.com, click on factory outlet) which are $350 including shipping. Both of these speakers have had quite good reviews. Finally, you could get some refurbished Cambridge Soundworks Tower 3 speakers from www.ebay.com/hificom, complete with 10 year warranty for < $300 with shipping. The Tower 3 is probably the 3rd choice out of these three, while the Wharfedale/Axiom comparison will depend on taste. Of the three models you have mentioned I have only heard the R40s. I think that they are pretty good speakers, but they don't go really deep into the bass. I would guess that you would enjoy the R40s more than the R30s, if for no other reason than the fact that the R40s go a little deeper in the bass. Good luck. Jason Franz |
