| Yes. | A Jul 25, 2002 8:34 AM | | I would certainly be willing to buy a used subwoofer that is more than 2 years old. Obviously, it must cost less than new, or it would not be a good deal (probably about half price for it would be good if it is in like new condition, though sometimes things may be more or less valuable depending on the demand). As for checking for faults, for the consumer, about the only way is to play it and listen to it. The longer you listen to it, the more likely you are to find any faults, if any exist. Also, you will want to be listening to music with a lot of low bass content (I like organ music by Bach, but you should listen to different kinds of music to make sure that it sounds fine in all cases). Now, if you suspect that something is amiss, then don't buy it. It is better to go with your instincts on such matters even if it means rejecting a perfectly good subwoofer than to take a chance on buying something that is worthless. If you are a paranoid type of person, just buy a new subwoofer made by a reputable company and buy from a reputable dealer, so that you will have the manufacturer's warranty and the support of a good dealer in the event of any malfunction. |
| Yes... | StevenSurprenant Jul 29, 2002 10:39 AM | | I've got three subs.
Two that I don't use (6 years old) and one I always use (12 years old).
I had to replace the volume control on the older sub (easy) but other than that, it has worked flawlessly.
FYI, If you turn the volume knob and you hear a scratching sound, it will need to be replaced soon. About $2 to replace.
The newer subs are ported and the older one is sealed.
I just like the way a sealed sub sounds over a ported sub.
Just my preference.
By the way, all my subs are about 100 watts and I have never been able to over drive them under real use. Actually, I have never over driven them... |
