| M&K over the Paradigms?!? | MikeA Jul 26, 2002 7:12 PM | | I can't believe it. I was actually disappointed with the Paradigms.
I got to go speaker shopping today. Looking for a stereo set that I can later build upon to make a HT system. Went to a local dealer who carries both the Paradigms and M&K. I've heard the Studio 100s before and LOVED them. But today after hearing that I wanted something for probably 60% music 40% movies the guy led me to a room that had the S125s and a V75 sub. W O W! ! ! I was thoroughly impressed. We then listened to the Studio 60s and the Studio 100s and the M&Ks sounded much more real on the top end. A sax solo that I played on both just sounded like I was in the room with the M&Ks whereas on the Studios it was almost like the tweeters were distorting. Bass-wise, the Paradigms were better; Heavier, more real sounding. It was like the kick drum was right in front of me. Overall though, I was drawn back to the M&Ks. I never would have believed it. Anyway, both of them are out of my league but at least now I have a sound to shoot for. I'd like to spend $800-$1000. Anybody else have some suggestions? I want something dynamic but true; not hypie. |

| Take your $800 and find some used Von Schweikert VR3's | entrope Jul 26, 2002 8:23 PM | | They retail for about $2000 but are discontinued now and can be had used in your range. Tremendous soundstage, sweet mid-range and bass to 27hZ. No sub needed. The mids sometimes remind me of electrostatics. They use an aluminum dome tweeter that is rubber coated to eliminate any problems with brightness or ringing on the top end. They also have a rear firing tweeter for ambience which is volume controlled.
I bought a pair used strictly on reviews, discussions with the manufacturer and owners. I am stunned at the fidelity I have for the money. They compete in a much higher class. Fuller, richer than Paradigm or M&K but do need some wattage to drive them( 87dB efficiency). Downside they are not a beautiful speaker, covers are not removable and they are big, 44" x 16"x 12" but when the music starts they disappear. |

Hey Entrope, I just happen to know a guy that has a set of Von Schweikert's (don't know which model) in his mastering studio that he isn't using anymore. (He switched to Genelecs) That's an idea. I'm running an Adcom GFP/A 555 combo so I should be OK on power. I may just live in my cone of silence until I get some more bills paid off and then dive in. |

Why does it surprise you? Many speakers get a lot of talk on this forum...MOST of the time there are products a lot better for the same or less money...those companies are not as well marketed however, so people out shopping don't even stop to listen.
Indeed, JM labs is sort of like that.
You should also Check out the PMC TB2 http://www.pmcloudspeaker.com/tb1sf.htm and possibly the MMGs...I have never heard one myself but they seem reasonably priced and quite different in design from a lot of the stuff out there. http://www.magnepan.com/
Well they seem intriguing...perhaps a poor mans electrostatic...and that's a good thing. |
