| Help with Paradigm system | Texas Jul 29, 2002 12:19 PM | | I'm new to all of this and trying to set up a great HT/music system{about 50/50 usage). This will be bait to bring my 16 year old son's friends to OUR house. I'm on a tight budget-under 1000. We've listened to B&W, Paradigm, Dig Tech, Energy, Boston Acoustics, and Polk. We both liked the Paradigm, and it seems I can stay within a budget here, and maybe pick up some used equipment. Our room is 17x17. We're getting an 800 model Denon receiver.
I'm thinking of: Mini Monitors-front
Atoms-rear
CC370
Paradigm pdr 10 --or other good sub
within my budget.
We listened to v. 3's, and most of the used equipment is v.2. Is this a big difference, and could I mix the two versions-say front and back, or center, etc.
I found a good price on Atoms and minis, but are open box or demos, v. 2. This dealer recommended Minis all around (4)
Ebay has several minis, but v.2, used or new .
What about center--is CC350 ok with minis-either version?
How about CC270 with mini's. Will they be voice matched?
I don't mind risking a little on the used equipment. I don't want to pay a hunk of money for crappy stuff, even if it's new! I'm so confused--HELP!!

| re: Help with Paradigm system | WH Jul 29, 2002 1:18 PM | | Hey Texas,
I am no expert on home theater advice but I do have Paradigm speakers, the Monitor 7 v2, love them! If you can fit it into your budget I would go with four Mini Monitors. They are one hell of a speaker! My brother has a pair of the v1's, these could easily be the greatsest little speaker for the buck!
I am not familier with the CC-350, I only know the CC-370 and I have heard the CC-270. The CC-270 and the Atoms are from Paradigm's Performance series and sound quite different from the CC-370 and the Mini Monitors, which are part of the Monitor series. The tweeters are different, the bass drivers are different, heck, even the cabinets are built a bit different. I would think you would want to stay within the same series of speakers for proper timbre matching and all that stuff.
No matter what, I think the Paradigm speakers are a great choice, and the PDR-10 is a great sub. Again, I would try to stay within the same series of speakers for proper matching, and if possible go with the Monitor series. If not, than the Performance series are still a great choice.
Enjoy, and tell us what you chose! |
| re: Help with Paradigm system | Express Jul 29, 2002 1:53 PM | | I might stay with mini monitors times 4 and grab a center channel from the monito series such as a cc-370 or even a used cc-350. I can't tell the difference between v.2 or v.3. But v.1 is a different sound altogether so I would avoid mixing any of the earlier models. You should be able to get good deals on used minis either v.2 or v.3, they will serve you well. As far as the sub goes I would recommend going for the PDR 12 if you can squeeze that into the budget. Good luck with the boys. |
| Yes, go with the PDR-12 | WH Jul 29, 2002 2:13 PM | | I agree with Express. I listened to several subs at the dealers store about three days ago and am going to add the PDR-12 to my system. For a little more money I felt it was quite an improvement over the PDR-10 in terms of its output and control. Also, the PDR-12 is very good with music. Better than the PS series of subs in my opinion.
Wow, Mini Monitors, a CC-370, and a PDR-12! If you can make it work it would make a fine setup! Let me know when you get it, I'll be coming over! |
| re: Help with Paradigm system | jdrum1 Jul 31, 2002 11:59 PM | | I think it is worth the extra $$ for the pdr-12, that is the way I went. I started with that sub, Titan's for fronts, micro's for rear and the cc-270 center. A few months ago I decided to replace the fronts, move the Titan's to the rear and put the micro's in my bedroom. I was set on getting a pair of the minis, but before I was able to get them Paradigm released the phantom v.3. The phantom v.2's were not to great, but the v.3's are totally different. It took me a month to decide, but I went with the phantoms. I was much more pleased with the mids on these then the minis. No one has really paid much attention to them, but I think that it was because the v.2's were not very good. They sounded about like a Titan, but at twice the $$. I think that whatever your budget allows out of these you will be pleased. I even think the micro's are great, especially for around $100 a pair.
