| Norman Labs speakers | sam46 Jul 29, 2002 7:05 PM | | I picked up an old pair of norman labs speakers a while back at a flea market. I have been messing with them the last few weeks and they are really starting to amaze me. With my paradigms, I can't crank the volume much without the sound getting bright and sending me running to the volume knob. With the Normans, I can really fill the house with music, not just sound, and it seems the music starts coming from everywhere. It can be creepy to hear a tapping of drumsticks on wood coming from somewhere else in the room. I am listoning to Moody Blues In search of the Lost Chord, and it is scary at times. The sound of the harp strings seems to be floating around the room (no, I haven't been smoking the whacky stuff!) These are amazing speakers, at least compared to what I have been using. Has anyone ever heard of Norman Laboratories ? |

those are some great old speakers. A friend of mine picked up a pair at an estate auction about a year ago for $25. Neither of us knew anything about them, but for $25 how can you go wrong? We talked to a few people and found out a little info on them. From what we were told they were made in Norman Oklahoma, a small town not to far from here. The company changed hands a in the early 90's and soon went out of business(around 94). We were also told that someone that worked for them(not sure if it was an owner or what) still lives there and can give info(such as specs) and do repair work on them if needed, but we have not been able to verify this. I assume that these are a great looking speaker, the rest I have seen are. I was amazed how my friends sounded, especially considering they sat in a storage building for a number of years. What is the configuration of yours. I beleive his has two ten inch drivers, a mid, and a tweeter; but not sure of sizes. I hope this little bit if info helps, and if you find anything out let me know

Other than some cat clawing the grill cloth up one one, they look pretty good for junkers. They must have look really nice new, with the thick walnut cases. I replaced the foam surrounds and they sounded a little odd at first, but loosened up just fine. I can't find much info on them either. I read somewhere that the owner of the company refused to do any advertising, because he believed that magazine reviews were based on ad revenues (he might be right) Best 5 bucks I ever spent, amazing little speakers..thanks for the info |
