Does anyone find on speaker controls helpful?Worf101

I use a lot of vintage speakers, Ohm Walshes 2's and 4's, Epicures and Dynaco's. All have on speaker attenuation. I've notice that most if not all passive modern speakers do not use on speaker controls of any sort, lots of biwiring but nothing else. Was this stuff truly helpfull in the past? I hate to have to jostle my bookshelves around every time I wanted to cut a little treble off the high end? I find I have used the controls on the Walsh 4's to get a better sounding hookup but not on any of the others...

Some opinion and history would be helpful.

More of a pain in the kiester than anything else. The only ones I know of that don't go bad and get all intermittent are the toggle switches on older KLH models.

Maybe they don't use them now because:

1) They add to the production costs?
2) Nobody really uses them?
3) Because I don't know.

4) Because they allow users to mess up the sound.

I love adjustability. Those controls really allow you to set up the speakers perfectly for your room and tastes. What happens though, when someone buys the newest Brand X speakers and then jacks the bass up? His friends take a listen and then tell everyone they know that Brand X sounds boomy and muddy.

The benifits are subtle and the potential for disaster is high. Add the higher cost and it's a no-brainer for most manufacturers.

It's Worf but I don't mind... let's talk CARS!!!Worf101

The STS is da chite, da bomb, the car to get. It's fast, comfortable, pretty reliable (if you can say that about a GM product) and has too many horses for common sense. The only other domestic sedan that I would even consider is the Lincoln Continental with the Sport Package. Either car, the STS or the Conti will give you power, sophistication and comfort that's just this side of Stuttgart. I've driven both and would buy either. I really love the "limp home" prgram of the STS. It's a V-8 but in an emegency it'll do 45-55 mph with half the cylinder's firing. LOL, talk about a wing and a prayer.

Good luck with your purchase. Now can I interest you in a lime green suit, gold chains and a fur coat to go wit dat Pimpmobile?

"The Sharks"Toasted Almond

While the wife and daughters are tooling around in a '01 Windstar, I have...."The Sharks".

The Shark, is my white, '87 Chevy Caprice LS Brougham Classic. 305 V-8, wire wheels, red pinstripes. 202,000 miles. Rides like a stretched limo, and not a scratch on it.
Burgundy quasi-velvet interior. The vehicle was designed specifically for driving around Brooklyn, with a head full of grease, white South Brooklyn T-shirt (I think they call it a "wife beater" now), gold cross around the neck, and arm out the window. DEBUTANTEmobile!

The Gray Shark, is my '86 Chevy Caprice Brougham Classic. Not an LS (different instrument cluster and light package), it has the same 305 V-8, wire wheels, light blue pinstripes (on battleship gray), blue quasi-velvet interior. As we speak, The Gray Shark has 99,962 ORIGINAL miles. I bought it 3 yrs ago with 78,000 on it. Get this, I had been seeing this car around town, and wanted it in the driveway, cause The Shark had HEAVY mileage on it. Wanted something all ready to go if you know what I mean. I approached the people about it, and as soon as they opened their mouths I knew I had to have that car. NAZIS!! Absolutely meticulous about machinery they are. Car was garage kept its whole life. A month before I bought it they had it tuned, brakes and tires! I got it for 3 grand. When my kids sat in the back seat, they were the first people to ever be back there. When I put something in the trunk, it was the first thing ever put in there. It was HER car, and they always used HIS car. Plus, the entire maintenance history of the car was in a little red notebook in the glove compartment.
Did I get lucky on that one or what?

With 99,962 on The Gray Shark, it's killing me to go past 100k. I'll do it when I get the right group of people in there. Until then, I'm driving The Shark.

Both cars have radio-cassette decks that I NEVER turn on.

My Wharfedale's have themRGA

Some would argue that they degrade sound. But it's not entirely the same as the tone controls on your amp.

Mine control the high freqency driver and low frequency driver only...not the entire Bass range(which could be anything the amp decides). Not all controllers are the same, but the contour controls on my wharfedales have a 3db control per driver and assist with room reflection an power to the drivers. Since my Wharfelales use a circumphral horn design it could come in handy to level out the the upper and lower frequencies.

The Wharfedale Vanguards were made from 1987 - 1993 or so. I have yet to see too many speakers using such conrols except on subwoofers and some up scale Snells.

As the other poster noted...it's difficult to set up properly...but on the other hand at least you have the chance to tailor the sound to your room...after all most rooms are not optimal.
