Paradigm Studio 100s or Dynaudiosbig-ears
Jul 30, 2002 9:12 AM
I plan to upgrade to NAD Silverline S100 / S200 electronics with NAD S500 as the front end, and have narrowed down my choice of speakers to Paradigm Studio 100s, Dynaudio Audience 82s or Dynaudio Contour 1.3 Mk IIs. Having enjoyed every moment of my ownership of Audience 70s for the past 3 years, I do not mind admitting that I am a little partial towards the Danes. My listening is mainly vocals accompanied by violin, guitar and tabla, and it is detail, imaging and soundstaging that I am primarily looking for. I do not listen to rock. Comments / suggestions shall be greatly appreciated .

I own the Studio 100's and they are a great value. I listen primairly to Rock at higher volumes and they shine here. Comparing the 100's in my HT setup to Klipsch RF-5's in a separate 2-channel setup The RF-5's have more detail and dynamics (I'm driving the RF-5's with a 2 watt tube amp).

One thing I've found over the years is that electronics and rooms can make speakers sound very different. The slight lack of upper end detail in the 100's compared to the RF-5's that I hear could be differences in electronics and or rooms. Bottom line, I still love the 100's.

In the end it will really come down to what you hear. When I purchased the 100's there was just not that much difference to my ear between the sub 2K 100's and other speakers in the 3-5K range. Some of the higher priced speakers were a little better in some areas but not enough to convince me to lay out the big difference in dollars.

Take a look at my post above on the Klipsch. I've been plesantly surprised and find myself listening to 2-channel music more on the Klipsch than the Studio 100's. The Klipsch do benefit more from break-in than any other speaker I've heard. Finding a showroom pair that are fully broken-in could be difficult.

Just my experience.

Personally, I don't find Paradigm to be in the same league as Dynaudio.

Not to take anything away from Paradigm, as I have bought, and listened to, and currently own Paradigm speakers (Titan, Atom) , and I think they are a great cost/performance speaker. But overall I would give Dynaudio a clear advantage in performance. I like Paradigm speakers and I don't hesitate recommending them.

I currently own Dynaudio 82's and have had them for just under a year now. Every time I listen is still like the first time. Never before have I heard a speaker so completely remove themselves from the system. I find the 82's to be a cut above anything I've owned or listened to in the past. Including the Paradigm 100's.

Ofcourse this is all just my opinion, and personal preference is what it all comes down to, but count me among the die hard Dynaudio fanatics. :)

I'm glad I was pointed to Dynaudio, otherwise I'd still be going through speakers...........

Incidentally I have the 82's, 122C, and 52's being driven by Rotel, and it's a very sweet combo.

Have fun!

I owned and thoroughly enjoyed the Audience 70s for two years and searched for a smaller speaker which would better grace my room decor. I was seriously condidering the 1.3MK IIs but made the mistake :) of auditioning the 1.3SEs.

To make a short story even shorter, I brought the SEs home and all I can say is that they are twice the performers of the 70s plus they look terrific. BTW, the standard birds-eye maple finish is simply world class. They do show up at Audigon.com for slightly more that $2K from time to time which is very competive $$$ with the MKIIs in the standard finish.

BTW, if you decide on stand mount Danes, I highly recommend the 24" Osiris stands which last I checked, were on closeout at Audiogon, brand new. Perfect match for the Danes and the the best built stands (plus very attractive) I've come across for the cash.

Have fun.

Dynaudio. No contest, as they're not even in the same class. I have heard both and own neither. You shall see a lot of enthusiastic paradigm owners around here, but if you can, listen to these side by side. I think you will see (or hear as it were) what I mean. Paradigm will hold their own in their price range, but there are far better speakers available.

there and everywhere!!! I think "holding there own" is an understatement...far from the best made I'd say they kick butt at many price points and as you can see below it's a bit more than hype of THIS site.....I'm sure there's better out there...MUCH better I'm sure...but for under 2K the 100's are one tough customer....but I do agree 100% let your ears do the talking (or hearin' as it where)..side by side...blow for blow!!

Hi big-ears..I listen to ethnic jazz and world music so we almost listen the same kind of music..I also like the tabla sound a lot ..I would suggest you Paradigm as well..I use Studio 100 and the soundstage is big..Imaging is good..maybe the midrange detail is not very elaborate but it is not bad either...and let me tell you the sound of the tabla on Studio 100 is really deep!!!.As you probably know the bass of Studio 100 is proverbial but I still intend to use Servo-15 with the Studio 100 just for music again..

Speaking as a Quad man, I think the Paradigm Studio 100, v. 2, is a great loudspeaker which stands up very well to a lot of much higher priced competition and is better than most of it. But of course, I agree not every one has the same taste.

I haven't heard the Dynaudios, but I believe the measure very well, as do the Paradigms.

The Paradigm Reference speakers are great loudspeakers, so I would suggest serious auditioning. But you may well prefer the Danes or something else.

Many thanks your posts.

Mabe I am a bit prejudiced, but there is something almost magical about the Danes...

I do intend doing some serious auditioning and shall revert soonest. In the meantime -
Happy listening!

magical is a PERFECT way to put it.

Had an out of body experience listening to Miles Davis through the Danes last night. No other way to describe the Danes - pure magic! I now know what they mean when they say - "WE KNOW, DO YOU?"

I just never thought speakers could have this affect on me.......

my 2cents is that if you don't do rock, you might look at something other than either of those 2. the local dynaudio dealer here steered me away from the 82s for 'normal' size rooms. unless you really need to crank 'em, and for mid range, the contour line in standmounts are a cut above the audiences. i did a bunch of a/b on the contour 1.3SE vs the a-72. i wished i couldn't tell better, but unfortunately, as often happens, the really good stuff sounds better. i went so far as to bid on some 1.3s and lost, on line. found something i like just fine, but the dynaudios were killer. you might ask around some more about the 82s for your kind of music. my local store dudes would tell you that is not their strong suit, i think. and i'll say it again, i did not hear the 82s, altho i wanted to... i thought the rest of the audience line was very nice; contour just was noticeably better and the 1.3SE, tops. especially for the vocals.
