$6,000 Stereonewbster
Dec 5, 2002 3:52 PM
If you had that much to spend on a system and listened to lots of classical and jazz what would your system consist of? It would go in a room 20 x 25 foor room and would have to be dynamic and sweet at the same time. (SA)CD's only.

anthem TLP 1 stereo preamp and tuner $600
Sony SCD-C555ES SACD 5 disc Changer $600
Paradigm studio 100 v2 Main Speakers $1600-$2000 depending on finish
Anthem MCA 20 Amp $1000
If needed Paradigm Servo 15 Sub $1500
Assorted Cables $200
Total $5500-$5900
These prices are all retail or close to it, so you could probably pick this all up for about $5000
If you want to go multichannel (for SACD) add another $800 for a five channel amp(anthem mca 50) and another $2500 for a multichannel preamp (Anthem AVM 20). almost forgot the other three speakers for multichannel. You could get three studio 20s for the center and surrounds ($750-$850). This option would alow you to move it to a home theater
This 5 channel option require another $4100 for a total just under $10,000

The system that I demo the EPOS M15 that I mentioned in the response to your previous thread is in this price range. Customers are stunned by the directness, livliness by such a modest system even when compared to some 5 figure system. However, in order to avoid being commercial, I think it is inappropriate for me to list the complete system here.

Classical and jazz - no vinyl? To each their own.

Source: Phillips SACD-1000, $400 at Tweeter apparently

Preamp: FT Audio Little Wonder, $500....I haven't heard this myself, but a number of people I respect have and love it. I will be contacting Paul about an audition in the next few months. You acn't go wrong with their return policy.

Amp: used Rowland Model 5, typically <$2200

Speakers: used Martin Logan Aeon, $2200 pair on Audiogon right now.

IC's: 2 pairs of Cardas 300B, $200

Cables: Cardas Twinlink, $100

Mod: Reference Audio Performance Upgrade on the Phillips, $500

This is assuming that you've already got a rack and isolation devices. You may also consider spending another $500 and looking at a used Placette line stage if you must have a remote control.
