| Unusual problem with speaker transparency | ZMC Dec 6, 2002 5:01 AM | | Hi all,
I've heard some folks describe speakers as transparent. Well, I have a little problem with mine, because it IS transparent. Literally.
I have my TV in front of my living-room window, and my wife insists on having the shade open during daytime - you know, those plants... I have a Paradigm CC-170 center on the top of the TV, and through its port the light shines right trough the driver, projecting a quarter-moon (or "C") shaped image on the grill (of course, only on the left side - that's where the port is)! No biggie, but it just doesn't look good. When I wanted bright speakers, it wasn't exactly what I was looking for.
Should I plug the port in (the receiver is set to small center anyway, having a sub taking care of bass)? Or is there something that blocks the light but not the air-flow?
I guess it sounds a little stupid, but I hope you don't mind this question on Friday...
Have a great weekend, and get a few good flicks in this lousy weather... |

Just make sure you can't see it from the front, that's all. This way you don't have to worry about affecting the sound by blocking the port. |
| The best solution... | jeskibuff Dec 6, 2002 6:34 AM | | ...may be to experiment with plugging the port. Do it just to see if you like the sound better with it or without it. If it sounds better with the plug in, you have a simple solution. Your problem then advances to how the sunlight will decay both the port plug and the speaker's finish over time!
If you like the sound better without the plug, try some kind of opaque screen. Maybe some kind of stiff paper that sits under the center, extends several inches behind the speaker, then is attached to another vertical piece that actually blocks the sunlight. A very cheap solution and as long as the aesthetics are OK and the paper doesn't introduce any buzzing, effective. If it doesn't look very good or buzzes, try a different material. |
