which subwoofer should I buy?derlow
Dec 6, 2002 9:17 AM
I am going to buy either the Hsu Research VTF2 of the Yamaha yst sw800. It is going to go in my dorm room. I am a fan of tight, hard hitting bass, mostly for rap music. Also, it is important that it does a good job for home theater. which one will get louder but yet sound clean at the same time. Also, which one is the better subwoofer, noting that they are both around the same price.

I would go with the HSU over the Yamaha.

If you really want hard hitting tight bass, you can't go wrong with the HSU. You can also spend a bit more and get a sub from SVSubwoofers. They make amazing subs from what I hear for relatively low prices compared to the competition.
Of those twoBryan

Get the HSU without hesitation.
I prefer Velodyne....it is one of the best I have heard .dvjorge

I was attracted to the reputation of Velodyne when I was shopping, but for subs in the cost range of the HSU sub, I don't get the impression much compares, except of course SVS (which I proudly own and highly recommend if it's in the right price range).

Having never heard the HSU or a Yamaha I'm hardly in a place to really make a recommendation, but having read MANY reviews, it sounds like you can't go wrong with an HSU sub.
I agree .Velodyne is expensive but .......dvjorge

Sure a good model from Velodyne must be expensive but the bass is three time better than others. Don't take Yamaha .HSU is a good option for the price. Also you can see the KLIPSCH KSW-12 which is an excellent sub.Brand Namez.com has it for around $350.
Good Luck,
Jorge.

Velodyne's been around for a looong time. They their stuff but their entry level CHT aka. Classic Home Theater series leaves some room for improvement.

Heard CHT series. I wasn't impressed. Will audition HGS series tomorrow. God i wish it wasn't Xmas season so I can go places without traffic.

I was looking at velodyne, but the velodyne is way more expensive. I am not really looking to spend that much on a subwoofer. Trying to keep it under 500 dollars and the yamaha and hsu seem to be the best in the class for that price range. what do u guys think
watch out for those noise violations in your dormzambonikane

i would look at the paradigm family of subs. you my be able to pick up a used pw-2200 or a new ps-1200 (lists for $519 i think)

The Velo CHT-10 is quite a decent sub for under US$500. For a 10-inch sub it's fairly large (about 15 x 15 x 18) which is a good thing as far as performance is concerned.

If your dorm room is as small as mine, they will both be overkill. I had a 12" Yamaha sub (YST-SW300) in my dormroom and not only did I get yelled at by the other residents, but it echos off all of the walls and halfway through the movie I had to turn it down because the bass was so strong (kinda droning). Keep in mind that you will be moving in and out of the dorm room all of the time, and will have to move the sub all of the time. Gets to be a pain in the ass if you have a 60lb sub that takes up half of your car. Get one that will have a return policy incase you it doesn't work as well in your dorm as in the store. I ended up going with Aperion Audio 8". Tight bass fills up the room and when I get older it will be perfect for a bedroom. They have 30 day return policy and If you get A stock they take 25% off.

Dont get the Velodyne unless you want to be evicted.I have the CT-8 in a 16x24 room and its almost more than I can stand.I could not imagine a more hard hitting sub.I have not heard the HSU but I have heard a Yamaha and an Infinity in friends setups, there is no comparison, mine will outperform thiers put together. And the best part is I paid $199 for it ,found an open box deal but I think it lists for $299,a steal for that.
