| biamping question | jamesw20m3 Dec 7, 2002 1:24 AM | | I recently purchased a pair of PSB stratus silveri and am thrilled with them. A flyer inside infomred me that I could biamp the speakers a more dramatic sound. I used the surround back channel of my pioneer elite vsx-43 as the bass for each speaker. I really cannot tell that much difference and maybe a decrease in soundstage. Any suggestions or has anyone noticed similar findings?
Thanks

| My experiance | StevenSurprenant Dec 7, 2002 8:06 AM | | I use what is refered to as vertical bi-amping, meaning that I use two stereo amps, one for each speaker.
It doesn't seem to change the sound, not that I can tell, from that of using one single stereo amp for both speakers. However, since I am using two power supplies, the speakers are slightly more dynamic when the volume is turned up. In your case, I believe that you only have one power supply and so you might not see any improvement.
What I have done, that seems to make a big difference, is to sightly turn the tweeters to a higher volume relative to the woofers. It resulted in an increase of transparency. I might mention that doing this doesn't make the speakers any brighter, only more transparent. It has the side effect of making the soundstage more apparent too. I like it so much that I don't think I could go back to using a single amp.
If your reciever allows you to vary the balance between your back channels and your fronts, you could try this too. Just remember that you don't need to vary the difference by a large degree.
Aside from that, I understand that the real benefit of bi-amping comes when you use an active crossover. This reduces the needed power by a factor of 1/4 and eliminates phase problems (amoung other improvements). Doing this increases every aspect of the sound. Not having actually done this myself (yet), I can only pass along what I have read. |
