| B&W 300 series | Fil10 Dec 7, 2002 2:18 PM | | Just wondering if anyone out there has used the b&W 300 series for home theater. I listed to a pair for fronts and the LCR center channel...with a Velodyne CHT-12 for as sub. It sounded good in the showroom but was wondering if anyone has had the experience in their own home? I was debating on this system and the Cambridge Soundworks Newton MC300 series. |
| Spend the extra $150 and get the 601s... | cone Dec 8, 2002 2:15 AM | | especially if you plan on doing any music listening...be it "critical" or not...in terms of detail, soundstage, and bass reproduction..the 601 is clearly worth the extra cash...and I am by no means a B&W fan...but they did get something very right with this model...for small speakers they sound very full...the only downside:they are revealing of electronics... |
| Spend the extra $150 and get the 601s... | Fil10 Dec 8, 2002 6:29 AM | | Would I have to upgrade the center channel as well or could I get away with the LCR3? I am running the Onkyo SR700 and have a SONY 43" big screen to run with it. Also do I run the 301's for the rear speakers and any suggestions on the subwoofer? |
| Spend the extra $150 and get the 601s... | Ray from RI Dec 8, 2002 8:49 AM | | It is most important in a HT to match the front three channels. The B&W 601s are matched with the LCR60. The rears are less important, but B&W has the 600. That's what I have, and all 5 should costs about $1K.
You don't need to match the sub, and it depends on how much you want to spend. For about $400-600 Consider SVS and Hsu Research, if you don't mind getting them directly from the manufacturer. Or any Paradigm models if you want to hear them first.

| cone is right about the 601s | StevenSurprenant Dec 9, 2002 11:49 AM | | I've had them (601 S2) for several years and they just keep getting better...
They cannot compete with the big boys in bass and they don't have that last degree of high frequency extension, but when it comes to imaging, tone, and disappearing, they are marvels for their price.
When I first got them, I wasn't at all impressed. They were just a tempory buy until I decided on a good pair. As it turned out, with a little tweeking, I now find it hard to part with them and I worry that the "Better" pair would fall short in the area where these shine.
When set up right, they image like crazy!
Cone is also right when he says that they reveal the electronics...
Right now, I am going straight into the amps(they have volume controls) from the DVD palyer. I took the preamp out of the circuit because it degraded the sound somewhat. It's a pretty good pre-amp too.
Of course, in your case, this is not important to you.
The soundstage with these is so huge that I don't feel the need to go surround sound and the dialog is cystal clear.
Hmmmm....
Sounds like I'm trying to sell these...
But anyhow, it you can find a used pair, I would jump on them...New is also good... |
