Dynaudio or Sonus Faber ?iceorn
Dec 8, 2002 4:41 PM
Is it a matter of quality or taste?
I like the Sonur Faber Concerto and the
Dynaudio Contour 1.3MKII
I have a Rotel RB-991 Power Amp. (200W)
and a Rotel RC-972 Control Amp., Kimber PBJ kables
and a "semi vintage" CD, a Harman/Kardon HD7600.
I gues the first thing you will addvise is to throw out
the Harman/Kardon ??
Please give me your advise.

The Contour will eat the Concerto for breakfast, lunch and dinner!

With your amp, the Dyns will sing.

I haven't listened to the specific models you mention, but I have listened to Contour 1.8MKII, and SF Grand Piano.

I, in fact, like Audience 82 much more than SF GP. It is all a matter of taste, but I found The Sonus Faber's a bit too laid back for my tastes, I didn't care for them. They are beautiful speakers, but just do not do it for me.

But, I haven't heard anything that comes close to Dynaudio, so I am biased. :)

And, Rotel/Dynaudio is a sweet, sweet combo. I use the 1095 to drive a surround combo of Audience speakers. I couldn't be happier.

Have fun!

Thank you for your coments,
what CD player would you recomend in the <$1.000 range?

I would recommend the Rega Planet cd player. It is a single tray cd player, but is probably the best sub $1,000 unit out there, imho. I need a carousel player and use a 101 cd mega changer (Pioneer), but if I were to go with a single slot unit, the Rega would be my choice. It retails for around $900.

Arcam also makes some good cd players. For a good budget model cd player, look at Cambridge Audio.

Cheers!

Rega Planet 2000 is the most vynil-like CDP I have ever heard, I like it very much. To my taste, it sounds better than xxxx megabucks Wadias. Very soft and musical. You can listen to music even with bad CDs.
My CDP is an AH! Njoe Tjoeb 4000 with 24/192 DAC upgrade. I like it more than the REGA because it is more detailed and has a bit of that tube warmth. It costs around 1.200$ and you can look for the sound changing the tubes.
You must know that dynaudio contour are extreme power suckers, the more you give the more they want. I have listened almost all the contour series (1.1-1.3 MKII-1.3SE-1.8MKII-3.0) with Krell 250 and it was a great difference with other amps with less power and money ...
I have recently got 1.3 SE. I listened to 1.8MkII and 1.3SE are far better, more bass control, imaging, detail and soundstage.
To match this speakers with a sub will be a difficult job, because maybe you are going to loose the superb bass control from Dynaudio.

Thank you for this,
it confirms my feeling for the Dynaudio.
Would you consider any other speakers in this price range?

Hi, Icehorn:

For less than the MSRP of the MKII with a standard finish, you can pick up a slightly used pair of Contour 1.3SE. In my view, the SE is a worthwhile upgrade over the MKII in just about every performance category. You can find them at sites such as http:///www.Audiogon.com in the low $2K range, asking. Seems that folks are moving up to the new Dyn Anniversary 25 model and hence their occassional availability.

An additional speaker which gets very good praise in this category is the Silverline Audio SR17. The Silverlines also Dyn drivers, I believe. I have not been able to audition them so I can't comment on their performance.

I would seriously consider the Reference 3A product. I did an AB comparison with the Contours 1.3 MKII and preferable the De Capos. I picked up a used pair for $1200 in Ontario.
Good suggestion..Jetsons

I thought about suggesting the DeCappos (which I've heard with tubes only). The poster's high output SS amp held me back from doing so as the DeCappos seem to be better suited with tubes, from what I've read. The Dyns on the other hand, thrive on quality high current SS amplification.

Enjoy your DeCappos! I'm sure RGA is envious.:)

Happy Holidays.

Hallo,
do you remember a thread posted by hola about amp-preamp combo for Dynaudio 1.3 SE?
I think I am decided to get an Audio Van
Alstine transcendence 7 SL hybrid preamp and a Odyssey Stratos Dual Mono amp. What do you think about?
Have you heard something about Van Alstine preamps?
I am a little affraid of their reliability, because I live in Spain and this will be a pay-and-go purchase.
thanks,
Manuel

Jetsons knows what he is talking about... I bought my speakers and gear 70% from what he told me, and I think I am getting the sound ...
I listened to Sonus Faber Concertos and Grand Piano, and:
Dynaudio 1.1 eats Concerto in every parcel except esthetics and deep bass depth, but it is a matter of taste.
1.3SE are just in another league. I would look for a used pair.
Sonus Faber have lots of added and artifical warmth. With Dynaudio you just listen to the rest of your equiment, good gear sounds good and bad gear sounds bad, that´s simple.
Sonus Faber is like ... Diane Krall? good look and soft feelings
Dynaudio ... Ella Fitzgerald?
Good luck,
Manuel

dosent even have one!!! "I love Spain"
