| Looking for speaker advice .. TIA!!! | kraka40 Dec 8, 2002 7:53 PM | | Hey all ..
Any and all advice greatly appreciated!!
I'm building a new house and I have a rather interesting family room that poses some challenges for HT/Music speaker configuration.
The room is approx. 18x20 ft with 20 ft ceilings. On the right side of the room (looking at the tv) it is relatively open going into the eat-in kitchen. At the back of the room are stairs going to the 2nd floor. The left side of the room is pretty much a wall except for a set of French Doors.
The optimal placement for (L+R) surround speakers would be where the French Doors are, and the support beam directly across from them. The height (off the floor) for those speakers would be about 85 inches (to accomodate for the French Doors).
In the front of the room the TV/Entertainment center is built in to the wall above the fireplace. I am prewired for speakers on either side of the TV (in the wall) and in the surround locations mentioned above. I also am prewired for a sub in the front-right corner.
My wife prefers in-walls and due to the height of the tv, I feel like I would need speakers with directional tweeters.
So with all these ideas and challenges, I'm still lost and looking for HELP!!!
I really liked the sound of the Boston Accoustic reference speakers, but wasn't able to hear their in-walls (same with the Paradigms). Based on price, I won't be able to afford their heigh-end speakers, though I did like their CR speakers, Paradigms are a close second for me.
So, my questions (for those of you that have hung around to read my ramblings):
1) If I go with 2-ways for the front (and possibly surrounds) do I go with a 6" woofer to fill out my mid-range and allow the sub to pick up the low-end or do I go with an 8" woofer up front and 6" on the sides. Or what!?
2) Do directional tweeters actually help, I am really worried that the speakers will be too high up and therefore I will spend most of my energy (electricty) filling the entire chamber rather than the listening area.
3) I've been told I need to go with a 12" sub to fill that room properly. Any opinions on this?
4) General thoughts on in-walls?
TIA!!

Bare minimum for you will be dual subs. One thing you may want to do is talk to a reputable consultant or two in your area as they may have some ideas for you to consider. Another thing to decide upon is how much your budget will be and give this information to the consultant. |
