| Room accoustic & speaker placement | melan Dec 9, 2002 11:11 AM | | One comment on this site came to me as a revelation: The fact that sound was fundamentaly limited by a) the original recording and b) the room accoustic.
I came to think that my speaker placement was probably totally wrong and that I could improve my listening room following simple guidelines.
So I have a 10ft x 27ft room for both living and dining room. The couch splits the room in half and faces the speakers at one end. Sitting in the couch I have the speakers about 13 feet away in front and the back wall lays about another 13 feet behind. All that in a narrow 10 feet wide room. I own Def Tech BP-6B speakers and use them for music only.
How can I get the most of that with speaker placement and room accoustic improvement? |
| 27' by 10' room = problems unless speakers are on long wall | Richard Greene Dec 9, 2002 11:30 AM | | With the room only ten feet wide it will be tough to separate the speakers enough ... without them being too close to the side walls (= loud early reflections = poor imaging). I would try the speakers facing the long wall with your couch placed against the long wall and an absorbant wall hanging, such as an oriental carpet, hanging behind your ears. I'd start with the speakers about seven feet away from your ears. This placement is recommended by Audio Physics, a European speaker company (you sit against wall with speakers located in the middle of the room):

When all else fails, place your seat and the speakers in the middle of the room away from walls and sit as close to the speakers as possible to reduce the effects of the room. |
| One refinement to that... | jeskibuff Dec 9, 2002 11:53 AM | | Try hanging the oriental carpet on the wall. Hanging it behind your ears will probably fatigue them worse than will a "Roseanne Barr Patriotic Songs" album played on a Bose Acoustimass system.
Sorry, Richard, I just couldn't resist! :> |
| Richard has a point. | Bobby Blacklight Dec 10, 2002 10:52 AM | | My room dimensions are similar to yours at 13 X 25 and the only way I can get it to work is with the speakers on the long wall. Also checkout the spreadsheet at

Very helpful with room placement of your speakers and you. |
