Some Questions about DynaudioAndy767
Dec 10, 2002 7:47 AM
This refers to the Contour series.

Excluding SE and anniversary speakers, does the entire range use the same tweeter? Is the Dynaudio 1.1 driver complement the same as the Contour 3 and 3.3 for the midrange and treble?

I went and heard the 1.1 and 1.3mkII on the weekend and I felt that whilst on larger orchestral passages the 1.3mkII had more weight the 1.1 sounded almost the same. This could be positioning or maybe I can't hear so good, or maybe the 1.3mkII just give that bit more extension. Considering that I will be using a subwoofer to crossover at speaker level to a pair of bookshelf speakers I could save $500 by getting the 1.1s. If the above questions turn out to be 1. same tweeter across range and; 2. same mid and treble for 1.1 as 3.0 and 3.3 then I would think that a good subwoofer crossed over at 100Hz or so, splitting the signal to a pair of bookshelfs should give the same if not better performance than the 3.0 or 3.3. Feedback?

Might check with the folks at Dynaudio with your question.

I'm fairly certain that the tweeters for ech of the Contour models you mentioned will have different part numbers as will the drivers. I've read that Dynaudio will use their higher quality drivers with each succeeding model number in their Contour range.

The cabinet construction between the two models is quite different. The MKIIs use a sandwich type construction which is not the case with the 1.1s. The MKIIs also use a considerable larger motor structure in their mid bass driver (78MM voice coil vs 38MM for the 1.1).

However, what's important is what you hear and if need be, audition them again. If they sound darn close to you, pocket the savings and invest in a qulity sub, Christmas presents or both.

Happy Holidays.
