How far can you crank up a sub re: the dial on the subProdigy
Dec 12, 2002 4:05 AM
Are the dials on powered subwoofers usually like the dials on analogue amplifiers? As in at 12 o'clock you're at max, anything more is pushing it too far?

The sub in question is a paradigm ps-1000. I'm trying to make up for poor positioning of the sub by cranking it up a bit. There is no choice where the sub can go - my room back at home just isn't as good as my uni room and as such I don't get as much impact from the sub and want to know how far I can turn it up on the dial.

Cheers

No, you can turn the dial up as much as you want. Obviously, if the sub starts to clip or distort, that means you could be damaging it, so beware. There is no 12 o clock rule howevever. I keep one of my subs maxed out on volume on the back of the sub and use the subwoofer channel on the reciever to adjust the volume.

Cool thanks.

I'm gonna get this beast cranked up seriously loud for my LOTR DVD night in a couple of days time :)

Only problem is that because of my poor placement (I have no choice...) it's causing quite a lot of things to rattle as there's enough volume - just not in the right places!

forces at work...

Just did LOTR yesterday...was demoing the sub to my wife...had the whole 5.1 set up...part of the way through the room's door was a little ajar and it just started to vibrate something horrible - like an earthquake.

We were in an earthquake recently and still have the shakes 'cos of that experience.

Prolly just the air-pressure than any real room shaking going on...(my sub will not really do much beyond 25 Hz per specs)...but that woke her up !

I highly recommend leaving just one or two things hanging about that do some rattling for good effect !!!
