Help improve my subweez82
Apr 7, 2003 7:34 PM
I have a KLH-KSUB10. I know its not the best sub but it sound good in my small aprt. My question is, what is the best and cheapest way to improve the sound quality of this sub. Also would replacing the woofer help? When I play it loud it gets distorted. I would like to play it louder have it go lower and sound better. Thanks for your help.

Probably the cheapest way of improving the sound of your sub is playing around with placement of it. You'd be suprised how much of an impact where you put the sub has on the amount of bass/quality of bass it puts out. You may or may not have the sub in a place that is not optimizing bass in the listener position.

The next cheapest (and probably the best) way to improve the quality of bass put out by your sub is to get a parametric equalizer. The popular one here is called the Feedback Destroyer. I don't know all that much about it actually, but I think Worf and Richard Greene are the two that have used it (as well as others). Basically, it takes peaks in bass response (due to your room) put out by your sub and equalizes it (them) as much as possible. The Feedback Destroyer is a multi band(?) equalizer so if you have more than one peak in your room, you can account for multiple ones. I think it goes for about $150.

If it's distorting, then you got it set too loud. As Midfi said, tinker with the positioning. It could be distorting because you got it positioned in a way that much of the bass is canceling itself out, and as a result you have to turn it louder than you would need to in a different position. If you're after maximum bass output, put the subwoofer in the corner.

The other tweak that I would recommend is a parametric EQ like the Behringer Feedback Destroyer. Along with a Radio Shack SPL meter and a Stryke test disc, I was able to adjust my subwoofer within 3 db all the way down to 25 Hz. Not only is that serious bass, but it's also clean and accurate sounding. Before making those adjustments, my room was causing huge peaks to occur at 88 Hz and 32 Hz, which made the subwoofer unlistenable. After applying the EQ, the bass is incredibly well integrated with my mains.

Thanks for the replys. Sorry I took so long to get back to you guys. I have all ready found the best placement for my sub (best bass output and sound quality). I should have been more clear on the distorting, it only happens when I try to out bump my neighbors. I would like to try a Feedback Destroyer but I don't have the money for it. Would buying a $80 (I can't go higher right now) woofer help or would I also have to get a new sub amp?

You'd be better off saving that $80 and start putting it towards a better sub. That sub was made specifically for that enclosure. Also if I'm right, that enclosure has ports, these ports were tuned they way they were because of the driver they were using. If you put a new driver in there, the ports won't be tuned right due to the different driver. So I suggest you save up some money and buy a subwoofer kit from parts express, or buy the Rava or HSU-VTF-2. You really aren't gonna get a whole lot of bass out of a $120 KLH sub. So I suggest you sell the KLH, and you'll almost be half way there to the Rava, and possibly over half way there to the Parts Express 10" kit. Trust me, it'll pay off in the long run if you save your money and get something nice. So just turn the bass down a little for now, and save those pennies.

Parts Express 10"-$350
Adire Rava 12"- $400
Hsu 10"-$450
