crossing over my systemjrotaryb

hey guys,

just had a quick question about crossover settings but first my system is as follows so you'll know what stuff I'm talking about.

-Kenwood VR6050
-Panasonic RP62S (DVD)
-PSB Alpha B (fronts)
-PSB Alpha Center
-PSB Alpha mites (rears)
-Velodyne CT80 Sub

Should I use the receiver's settings (there aren't many of them, select normal/large) to crossover or the sub's (which is adjustable if I opt for the indirect setting). I'm inclined to stick w/ the direct on the receiver but there aren't any actual #'s for reference, just normal or large. The sub adjustment would give more flexibility, right? Also, what should I cross these speakers over at, standard 80hz? The receiver has a "speaker EQ" mode to select small/normal/large but in reading the manual it seems more like an effect mode than a good crossover and I don't use any effects/DSP modes. It's a bedroom setup BTW.

Thanks!!
Jon

Use the bypass setting on your subwoofer so the signal will bypass the crossover. Use the receivers internal settings to tailor your sound. Hopefully you can set crossover point & speaker size for each source and save it. When DVD is your source, all the frequencies cutoffs are supposed to be included in the mix. But for music or other surround sound you may have to play to see what you like. When you set your speaker setttings to SMALL, it crosses them over at some point & sends that low end info to the sub. My speakers in the rear & center are actually fairly large, but I set them to small because it gives more of an impact when that low end goes through the sub. If you don't have a setup DVD, most THX movies will include a THX optimizer in the setup menu. That will give you some guide & help to see if your speakers are setup properly.

Ok, I found uot speaker EQ is an effect and not a crossover. I kept the system crossing through the receiver and just spent a couple hours with placement/distance and going through some scenes in various discs and tracks in CD's. Also got some fresh cable for the hell of it - I'm very very pleased, everything sounds fantastic and just reqquires a but of adjustment of the sub through the receiver on music, I haven't had the need to adjust during movies.
