what do you think about...chiragmp

Hi:

What do you gurus think about the following combo?

Klipsch RF3-II (floor standing mains)
Klipsch RC3 (center channel)
Klipsch RS3 (surround)
Klipsch KSW12 (subwoofer)
Denon 1082 (Receiver)

Any disadvantage in using KSW12 instead of RSW12 (or RSW10) with the reference series speakers? I have heard that crossover settings could be a mess though I am not very clear on the subject.

My budget is < $2500. Usage will be 70% movies, 30% music. Any other recommendations within my budget?

Thanks in advance.

Crossover shouldnt matter, as long as it is adjustable and they have the same slope (I dont think the would be diff). Klipsch have always seemed a little harsh on my ears, maybe im not a horn guy, but i was torn between the B&W 602 s3 and the Paradigm Monitor 7's. They were close in price locally and both were excellent speakers. I choose the B&W because it did music better IMHO then the monitor 7's. But i would recommend you look at the entire paradigm monitor series, and the B&W 600 series. The B&W are a warmer, smoother speaker, but not subdued. The Paradigm seemed to be a little rougher, not much but just a little, and not as clean. But probably better for movies. They had a little more impact. JUST DONT BUY BOSE!

Not a big fan of Klipsch but they are solid speakers. Just do not particularly care for the horn sound. Listen to the Klipsch for an hour or two straight prior to purchase. you may find you would rather go with something else. Prefer something mellower. Any particular reason you are going after the Klipsch sub? I would look at the Adire Audio Rava, SVS PB1-ISD, or the HSU VTF-2 first. Should be able to make an excellent sub as well for $350.

With $2,500 I'd get:

HSU VTF-3
Ascend Acoustics system 22-2201
Denon AVR-1082 ($595+ shipping from 6ave.com - for the benefit of others it is the same as the 3802)

But that's just me. ;^) Not thrilled with the Klipsch sub as the others I mentioned are regarded as top subs in their price range but you have made solid choices.

Thanks Bryan and otehrs,

No Particular reason...I was under the impression that an ideal complement to 5 speakers is a subwoofer made by the same company. But after reading your response, I compared KSW and RSW subwoofers and found a huge difference in RMS power rating and price. I guess there would have to be a very strong reason for me to justify spending more than $500 on a subwoofer. So I looked at the subwoofers you recommended here - Hsu Research VTF-2 and Adire Audio RAVA, in particular. They seem to offer more power at considerably lower price (plus they seem to have good reviews). I was also referred to Velodyne subwoofers by someone else. I looked at their product line and the only one that would fit into my budget is CHT12/CHT10. Any suggestions for these, anyone?

The low end Velodynes are good subs. However, the Rava and HSU are a step above them for about the same amount. I've got a SVS 20-39CS (non-powered sub) and have been extremely pleased with it. If you have something other than your primary receiver to power the sub look at the SVS CS series as they are one of the best out there for the price. But, if you do not like a tall, black cylinder sitting in your room it will not be the way to go. For HT, I would say SVS, then HSU, then the Rava. For music, it would go Rava, SVS, and HSU (note: I have not heard the HSU nor Rava and am solely going by preferences and reviews) with the SVS and HSU tied. Again, if you have something to power it with you may wish to look at the VMPS line of subs as they are supposed to be excellent for HT and music.
