B&W DM 600 speakers, combining Series II and Series IIIJeffrey N

I currently have B&W DM 602s Series II and a B&W LCR6 Series II as my three front speakers. When I got the 602s, I really wanted the 604s Series II but 1) could not afford them; 2) they were floorstanding and my toddlers would have destroyed them.

Now I'm ready to get the 604s but the Series II is discontinued. If I get the 604 Series III and move the 602s Series II behind me as my rears, will I somehow compromise the sound? Will the Series II and III combination work, or will I find that my speakers will not be timbre matched or otherwise not suited to each other?

Thanks for your responses.

I own the 603s2's and lcr. I think you would like the 603 better than the 604, unless all you want is a ton of bass. I prefer bass to be very punchy and the few hz lower they will go doesn't seem to justify the extra dollars. Use what you save to put toward a good sub---if you really need the extra bass. I only use my sub for home theater, as the 603's dont roll off(in my room)until about 38 hz. Hope this helps. Most importantly---buy what you like best, just offering my opinion.

No they are not the same...the tweeter is upgrade the drivers are different, crossover too. Ohh yeah...and the finish. They both use Kevlar drivers...and they both sound great different. The new line is more forward, the S2 was more neutral.

Hi,
How are you? You have a lot of experience and I know that but don't believe all manufacturers say.It would be possible that they sound a little bit different.Manufacturers have to justify the money that you pay saying that they are different and bla,bla bla.In my criterion they are the same speakers and the supposed changes are a market strategy.
Jorge.

B&W 602S2(on left): 603S3 (on right)

2-way vented box : 2-way vented box
52hz-20Khz +/-3db on reference : 49hz-22Khz +/-3db on ref
90dbspl @2.83volts/1m : 90dbspl @2.83volts/1m
8ohm(min 4.3ohm) : 8ohm (min 3.0 ohm) tougher to drive

1x25mm metal dome tweeter : same size
1x180mm woven kevlar cone(woofer) : same size
height 490mm : 490mm
width 236mm : 236mm
depth 306mm : 293mm

Don't get me wrong...if you see the S2 on a demo for a good price I would snap it up. And I would not be surprised if some liked the S2 better for its neutrality. The S3 though has a bit more of a forward presentation and a punchier(not better or worse but punchier) bottom end. The S3 apparently is being geared a bit more for H/T while trying not to lose the B&W sound.

You won't have a problem going with a series 3 in the front and series 2 in the back. The rears really don't have that big of an impact and the 602 still uses the same midrange driver. I like the S3 series a bit more but the difference are more of a nuance...the S3 is projected a little more forward...designed more for home theater than the S2 without losing anything musically.

I would also opt for the 603S3 in front if your room is not huge. The 604S3 looks badder but really the improvement in bass is too steep price wise IMO. The saving should allow you to get the LCR600 center channel which is a more important match for the S3 series. You generally want the front three speakers to be the same line(ideally the same speaker).

The LCR6 was not the best effort anyway. I'd sell it and go for the 603S3. Or you could even try the 602S3 and add a sub(depending on the sub this could actually be the best way to go). Though the 603 "will also allow you to hear out-of-phase sound such as the sound of a concert hall, something a single subwoofer can't handle."(Uhfmag.com)
