| If you had only 100$ what would be your choice??? | SilentServices Apr 11, 2003 8:46 AM | | If you had only 100$ what would be your choice??? What model of speaker would you consider with this so small amount of money?? |
| re: If you had only 100$ what would be your choice??? | adioster Apr 11, 2003 10:49 AM | | definately ebay. used celestions often go for cheap there. |
| re: If you had only 100$ what would be your choice??? | adioster Apr 11, 2003 11:01 AM | | definitely used - if you consider celestion be sure to get something from the 1990s. their line goes back pretty far. |
| Definately used | Bryan Apr 11, 2003 10:53 AM | | nOrh 3.0s would be a start. If you are not too big on quality, the KLH 9912s could be another option. But, far and away, used is your best bet. |
| I would pony up another $40... | Jimmy C Apr 11, 2003 12:36 PM | | ... and get the Dayton kit from PartsExpress. I know, I know... I have mentioned this more than once (ahem), but they ARE very good for the money. Mow a lawn, spend an hour or two OT, whatever. IMO, these are better than the B&W 303 and the Paradigm Mini Monitors. The only thing I can bitch about is a slight hollowness compared to bigger, better stuff. And - this is only noticeable in a larger room, when pushed.
If this is REALLY about a speaker system for under a C-note, I would probably get the best condition, used Boston Acoustics A-series I could afford - from the 80s. These used a Seas soft-dome tweeter that is fairly detailed and quite smooth. Bass is good (sealed enclosure) considering it's a stamped-basket, run-of-the-mill, generic woofer. IMO, the package simply works.
Actually, I might do the old B.A. before the Dayton kit... I would need a side-by-side to be sure. |

| re: If you had only 100$ what would be your choice??? | This Guy Apr 11, 2003 2:44 PM | | You can make a pretty good sounding speaker if you are willing to make one. Or you could get a few extra dollars and make the bookshelf kit that Parts Express sells. They got good reviews. I heard you can't lose for $120 a pair. |
| re: If you had only 100$ what would be your choice??? | RGA Apr 11, 2003 9:27 PM | | Easy...USED B&W DM 302 or 303(though this will cost more). The latter hits 25Hz@-6db in room. These are the two best standmount speakers under $300.00 that I have heard. And I have heard most of the standmounts in that price range.

| re: If you had only 100$ what would be your choice??? | RGA Apr 11, 2003 9:31 PM | | Just a note...the 303 is not really better than the 302. They are different though. The 302 does not have the bass response of the 303 but it is deep in an apartment size living room or bedroom. The 303 has more presence at the top end as well. The 302 is smoother in the midband though and that is where most music is. Neither are perfect of course...but if You can get either one at a $100.00 you're laughing.
Otherwise I would look for used or perhaps Demo Wharfedale Diamond speakers. Have not heard the new ones but the older ones were always reasonably pleasant and inexpensive. |

| Enough of this is silly chatter, Simply | Mash Apr 12, 2003 5:27 AM | | send me the $100, and I will later email back to you the details describing what speaker I bought with the money. Why rely on all these silly claims when you can have REAL data on what someond actually did with the $100 you sent them? Do not hesitate because I do not offer to do this for just anybody!
Only people who send me money.... |
| $69.99 del'd. | piece-it pete Apr 14, 2003 7:40 AM | | Absolute "audiophile" quality!!
LOL! But for the money, OK. Vidsonixs'MG-S84s'. I bought a pair of these for my daughter (I'm not THAT cheap, shes' got one of those squirming little things called babies, that turn into speaker-destroying toddlers in a real hurry :) & they're fairly attractive, gold tweeter domes excluded, and sound (for the money) OK, surprising bass for little speakers, if a little flabby, and OK highs, tho maybe not "crisp".
The 70wpc Yamaha driving them could blow them (and most other cheap speakers), but still, the upper volume is surprising for the money.
Talk about being damned by faint praise!!! But again, for the money I doubt they could be beat unless you start checking estate sales.
And if the baby destroys'em, no great loss!!

I got mine in less than a week.
Good luck.

If you could raise your budget closer another $80 or so you could get a pair of Paradigm Atoms which I highly recommend unless you need gobs of bass. They do an amazing job for the price. |
