JBL: Northridge NSP1 vs. SCS 150SL ???koeslter
Apr 12, 2003 2:43 AM
Hi guys:
I'm currently looking for the JBL series around $200-450s, I found NSP1 is usually much cheaper than SCS150 but I keep hearing good comments on them. Considering the fact that NSP1 doesn't have a sub, I reckon that NSP1 /w a sub is at similar price to SCS150, so which one should I choose (say the NSP1 w/sub may still be $50 cheaper, doesn't matter).
Sorry this is nothing new but I can't think of a better place to ask for opinions.
Thx

I used to own the NSP1 with the JB10 sub about two years ago. For the money, it really is a great system! I have recommended them to lots of people in that price range.

I don't know if you've heard the SCS150, but it doesn't compare to the NSP1. Even though both are targetted at consumer level buyers, the SCS150 is more of a HT in a BOX type sound, while the NSP1 gives you full HiFi speaker sound. It really is a nice setup. You should be able to buy the entire package (5spkrs,1sub) for about $350 (or less) from www.bestpriceaudiovideo.com. By the way, in case you do go for these, don't bother using any speaker wire thicker than 18 gauge. It won't improve much. So if you have 18 or higher, it will be just fine. Good luck on your shopping.

Thx for the advice.
Now I think I put more money in my other audio parts.
Currently I'm thinking of a "RoomTheater" rather than a HT, considering the fact that the living room is not much bigger than my bedroom...
Here's my list:
1. JBL NSP 1II w/ sub ($350)
2. Pioneer DV 440 DVD-player ($200)
3. Cambridge audio P500 Amplifier ($200)

Now I'm pretty confused, I planned to put $1000-$1200 into my hi-fi systems, now I have $250-450 left. I'm a big fan of Jazz and Rock so Mid and Tre are what I'm looking for. What should I do in order to upgrade my system as much as possible? Should I put in more stuff (say a EQ?) or buy higher class speaker/dvd/amp ??
Any comment will help, thx.

You think you put more money into your other parts? I think you're doing just fine. Do keep in mind that JBL has a strong supply & demand, thus the prices can be cut by half and still profit. I personally don't care for EQs, but I think that's a personal touch for everyone.

As for your taste in music.
My advise: Save your $300-400 for future upgrades (like maybe an EQ if you'd like later). Stick with what you have, see if you like, and if you don't, THEN think about upgrade. Lot of people tend to think "well, if I buy this, how much better will it sound".

My favorite class of music is old jazz, latin, and hip-hop. So I too wanted better mids and tremble. I went from the JBL NSP1 sat/sub combo to Klipsh RF-3II towers becaues I thought I would get a better midrange from a tower. But I didn't like the highs, so I exchanged the Klipsch Reference for Infinity Interlude because I wanted better clarity in the highs and mids. I kept the Infinity for a little bit, but at the end, I found that for my taste, I preferred the clarity that a bookshelf can give me. And so I'm back with bookshelfs... with better mids and treb them my towers. I now own two pairs of B&W 600 (all four corners) and I absolutely love them. Unless I can someday afford the B&W 802s (my dream speakers), I will keep these 600 because for me this is the best. They aren't towers, but they blow away all the speakers I've ever owned. Especially with music! I only use the JBL JB10 sub for movies because they don't match with the B&Ws with music.

So my point is, take what you have, see if you can find something that really bothers you with it. If it does, THEN think about upgrade. But if you like what you hear, then keep it. That's just my advise.
