Subwoofer help needed please.skribnod
Apr 14, 2003 12:31 PM
I am currently looking to purchase a 12" subwoofer for my home entertainment system. I have 2 ESS AMT 1D speakers, 2 ESS TEMPEST L4'S and 2 JVC ZERO FIVE'S. I am running these off of a Onkyo tx-sr800 7.1 theatre reciever. My question is what is one of the better subs on the market for the price? I have a line on a Klipsch RSW12 for $856 or a Sunfire true sub for $1000. Any help would be greatly appreciated. The room it is going into is a 13x18 foot room dedicated for the theatre room only. Thanks

For what you are looking at spending, how about something such as a HSU VTF-3 or SVS 16-46PC+? Even a SVS 20-39PCi should go down to 17 or 18Hz in that room. Either should be all the sub you will ever need. Of course, you can do a DIY sub ( http://www.adireaudio.com ) if you want and get even better performance.

How do the subwoofers compare when there is a a huge wattage difference between subwoofer companies? Klipsch boast 2400 watts peak, Sunfire says 2700 watts and the speakers i am being suggested to look at are only 700 watts and lower. Is there a major difference in the speaker sounds and performance due to the higher wattage? Thanks

you have to remember that those are peak numbers. In reality, the amplifier is delivering 125--250 watts in normal operation. These companies quote peak numbers more as a marketing tool than anything. It gives consumers the illusion that they are buying more than they really are.

I shop subs based on the driver and amplifier. That is what your really paying for. I've noticed that Adire uses inferior drivers in their lower end stuff. I was talking wtih a buddy that has worked with them in the past. The woofer they use on their $399 sub (I forget the name) is about $30. That doesn't scream quality if you get my drift.
Could you give a bit more info on where you got the $30 figure?yogo

The info on Adire's own website says that the Shiva driver (which is used in their $400 entry level Rava subwoofer) ALONE costs $125! It's a popular DIY driver among hobbyists and in comparison tests I've seen, it measures very well against the competition. Considering that the 250 watt plate amp that's used on the Rava sells for $180, that means you're basically paying $95 for an oak veneered HDF cabinet AND assembly. The sound quality of that Rava is well in excess of what they charge for it. I would know since I own one.

The difference will not be much. You have to double the wattage to get a noticeable increace in volume (3db). In short, a 1000W speaker will only be 3 decibels max louder than a 500W speaker (assuming both have the same sensitivity). The true difference between the 2400 watts and the 2700 watts is maybe 0.5 dbs. Given your room size one of the others I suggested should easily suffice and save you money.

It does take twice the power to make approx a 3db diff, which sounds twice as loud to us roughly. Don't think that the big watt class d digital amps are so much better. These amps are digital because they don't have the room for a heatsink in the small boxes. They quote 2700 watts because that is what it takes to push a driver with all of the back emf associated with the kind of eq used to make the little guys work. Say what you will about the little guys, but you will always get better sound from a large box because there are less tricks necessary. Physics is very straightforward, so don't let the marketing fool you. If you want killer ht,buy a used energy 18",dual 12" mirage bps-400,etc. Yes the little guys can hit 20hz, but most of the noise you are hearing is the harmonic,(40 hz) and a good portion of hte rest is a different form of distortion. And how many 10"
cube boxes can dig up a 16hz organ pedal! Buy a big box if you can and feel the difference!
