| Wharfedale floorstanding speakers in a 4mx4m room | Hein Apr 15, 2003 5:00 AM | | I'm currently in a small 4mx4m room, and am using my computer to play music. I want to upgrade my speaker system to a Hifi system.
I quite like the Wharfedale Evo-300(specially the dynamic response, midrange), but am not able to get one due to budget constraints. So, I'm looking into the Evo-100, or the Diamond 8.4. Any comments, since I haven't tried any of those two speakers.
My main concern is that can I use a floorstanding speaker in such a small room? How far from the wall do I need to place the speakers. Can I match the Wharfedale speakers with a Yamaha RX-4300? Or I need to get a Marantz? Other brands seems quite expensive too...
Any other recommended brands. |

Hopefully you will be able to test both together. But, in general, the Marantz will have a slightly warmer tone whereas the Yamaha will have a slightly forward/bright tone to it but both have an excellent reputation so you should not go wrong either way.
If the speakers are rear ported you will need to keep them away from the wall. Anywhere from 10 - 12" should be sufficient. Another option to consider would be internet only speakers, such as Axiom, nOrh, Ascend Acoustics, etc., used speakers, DIY, or bookshelf speakers and use a sub with them. |

How's the midrange if I get a bookshelf + subwoofer? The floorstand has two drivers; can the book+sub setup give me as good a midrange? I quite hate those metallic sounds from speakers....
Woow.. 10-12" is a lot, but the Diamond is front ported. Will the sound quality degrade much if it's close to the wall? I read somewhere that some speakers need to be far from the wall, even though front ported. Is that true(I can't find why, but it may be true)?
As for the amp, I need to check out on the power too, right? The diamond 8.4 seems to be rated at 150WRms from Wharfedale website..... |

For example, I had a pair of nOrh 3.0s. Excellent speaker. However, it doesn't do anything below 75Hz, nor does it claim to. If you were to get that and a sub, such as the SVS 20-39PCi, you will have a system capable of doing 20Hz - 20,000Hz.
The quality of the speakers and driver will be what matters most rather than the number of drivers. My Valdus 500s has one tweeter, one midrange, and two bass drivers. My nOrh 5.1 has a Vifa tweeter and Vifa driver and it sounds much better. Focus on quality rather than the number of drivers. Having 20 drivers looks impressive but it may sound horrible.
The main reason you want speakers away from the wall is the bass can be boomy if they are too close. The Diamond should be fine at 6" away.
As far as the amp goes, the Yamaha or Marantz should be fine. It is doubtful you will ever push the speaker to its limit. |

if you get a bookshelf that can get down to 60-70hz then you shouldnt have too much of a problem with major gaps in the overall frequency responce, at least that's been my experience |
