| Building a great sub under $400 | jackline98 Apr 16, 2003 7:13 PM | | I have a NAD 2 channel 100 watt amp and the resources to do woodwork for a sub cabinet.
I have been shopping for subs under $400.00 and don't like anything that I have heard. I want something that is tight, deep and very musical, but will thump your chest. I currently have a JBL PSW 12. It's O.K. but not great. I have heard that the M&K MX 150 would probably suit me but it's too much $$$.
Any idea how I could source the components and build a passive sub with adjustable X over for under $400.00? |

You could also look at the Parts Express Titanic and 15" DVC. If you really want to get it pounding, get the Adire Audio Maelstrom. This is probably your best bet with movies. Also it has a whopping 93 dB sensitivity. A high sensitivity is rare in good sounding speakers (besides Klipsch). But 100 watts just isn't enough for chest pounding bass, not even with a 93 dB speaker. So here's the Maelstrom site.

And here's a sight that has a good Amp for it.

If it is really important to stay under $400 you could get the Tempest which also has a terrfic sound. With this amp I'm sure you would even be satisfied with the Shiva. So I say go with the Maelstrom or the Tempest. I would probably go sealed for tighter bass. These drivers can already go loud enough in a sealed enclosure so you really don't need to go ported. I would only go ported if you want to tune it to a very low frequency for movie effects.

I will check out the sites.
I realized that my amp will do 200 watts bridged mono.
Do you have any input on sub box sizes and construction?
How about cross overs? |

I'm sorry I don't know much about crossovers, that's another reason I gave you the link to that one amp. Wait for Richard Greene to respond, he can help you out much more. |
