First Step Into Separates..which would you choose..Many Choices
Feb 27, 2001 3:50 PM
Hi, I am considering my first move into separates and buying a power amp(or monoblocks) to use with the preamp outputs of my receiver to power the 5 suround speakers.

Current options:

1> 5 Marantz MA700 monoblocks

2> 5 Parasound HA1201 monoblocks

3> Sherbourne 5/1500 5 channel power amp (new)(200 watts/channel)

4> Parasound HA2205A 5 channel power amp (demo)(200 watts/channel)

I do like the higher power option and will stretch to buy option 4 if worth the added outlay.

Your opinions of the above and any other feedback is appreciated

Thanks.

I would recommend # 4. I owned a Parasound HCA 2200 MK II for several years and it was a very good amp. The best bass you'll ever hear, lots of detail without getting to much fatigue. I did use a tube preamp with it though.

I'd go w/the Parasound HCA-2205AT - It is a very well made high current amp that has PLENTY of power for any speaker load. I auditioned one at home and loved it, bought it for another room in my house. You won't be sorry, plus, you'll just have one big bad mo fo of an amp - momoblocks are good, but the HCA-2205 is no slouch at all when it comes to power. Grab the demo, you'll probably get a great deal as well....

Go with the Sherbourn!

Excellent build quality and plenty of power. You can also get it for less than $2000 list...more like $1500 or I have even seen it as low as $1300 new with warranty. Check it out atleast. I think Sherbourn hasn't been reviewed much since it's such a new and unknown name...but definately built awesome! 5 separate power supplies!!!!
