| Connecting Two ONKYO M504's To Onkyo P304 Preamp | GlennS1939 Mar 7, 2001 5:15 PM | | Hi-I have two Onkyo M504 amps and wonder if both can be connected through my P304 preamps. The preamp has only a single output indicated in the manual for amp hookup. I am not clear if or how to go about hooking them up, or in fact if I can do so.I need an answer from some kind hearted audio expert out there. Thanks, Glenn PS I don't have the manual for the amps that might answer my question. HELP |

From the Y adapter to the amps use a good quality cable with low capacitance. Keep the cable short because the capacitance of both of the cables that go to the power amps add up.
Impedance-wise there won't be any problem. Usually preamps have an output impedance of few hundered Ohms, and the power amplifiers have around 20 kiloOhms of input impedance. By connecting two amplifiers to the output of the preamp you'll halve the load (power amp input) impedance seen by the preamp. As long as the load is greater than 10 times the output impedance of the preamp there is no problem. An example, let's say:
Preamp output impedance= 200 Ohms
Power amp input impedance= 20000 Ohms (20kOhms)
By connecting the inputs of two power amps in parallel you'll halve the impedance seen by the preamp: 20000/2 = 10000 Ohms.
The load is 50 times the impedance of the preamp's output impedance. No problem here.
You didn't tell us what you are going to do with the outputs of the power amps. I hope you won't parallel the outputs. THAT will cause trouble of course. |
