| re: No discernable difference between those... | Ace W. Mar 9, 2001 9:46 AM | | Simualar quality power supply, simular preamp, simualar number of features and bass boosters. They are the same more or less and will probably sound the same. I am guessing that you are focusing on HT over music. If you are more into music, seperates are better. If it is only HT and all your speakers are no less than 8 ohms, you might not notice any shortcomings or lack of power. For speakers rated less than 8 nominal or have a minimum impedance dropping into or below (gasp) the 4 ohm range you might have a problem unless you always keep it quiet. Make sure it has plenty of room, like an open back cabinet with about a foot above the top vents. Receivers don't have external heat sinks and those models don't have rear or front cooling fans which makes them tempted to overheat severely driving all 5 channels. |

| re: Help with choosing a receiver | Anime Guru Mar 9, 2001 9:55 AM | | I have the Yamaha RXV-1000 and I really love it. The Yammie came highly recommended to me by others who have used them before. A few things though. The 1000's is okay, but most Yamaha remotes are junk. Also, I find that I almost never use the DSP modes. So if that is what you are buying the Yammie for, then you may want to look around a bit more. Aside from that, there are connections a-plenty to be found on the back of the Yammie and I think that it is a great all around unit. Hope that helps!! |
| re: Help with choosing a receiver | kenzie Mar 9, 2001 10:40 AM | | i do not use the dsp either, the pioneer i am using now has them and i do not use them on it. i have a learning universal remote so the remote control is not a problem |
| re: Help with choosing a receiver | JayG Mar 9, 2001 2:15 PM | | If you want ot take a look at a great reciever for the money, take a look at the Sony STRV333es. This has great sound and is packed with features. Sony ES equipment also comes with a 5 year warranty. The HTR series from Yamaha is their lower end series and will not give you the sound quality that the Sony ES will give you. As far as the Denon AVR-3300, I used to own one. It is not a very user friendly reciever. It has a very warm sound which I liked alot. However, setting the unit up and getting it to operate correctly took a while and I have been selling and setting up home theater system for over thirteen years. If you would like to purchase a reciever call me. We guarantee the lowest prices.

| re: Yamaha and Denon are better than any Sony however... | Ace W. Mar 10, 2001 5:39 PM | | I have looked at the output stage of these receivers before though I would never use one. I will definetly say the 3300 and those two Yamahas will have a lot more stability and headroom than the Sony. If you want a receiver, Sony is one company you want to steer clear of. The 777ES which is much better than the 333ES has less than 30,000 microfarads of filter storage, no more than a $500 Yamaha, Denon, Onkyo, etc. If the 777ES is that inferior, imagine how puny the 333ES is! I bet the 333ES might pull 20-30w conservative power all channels driven-will clip alot on any transients at all. The Denon however would be about twice that before overheating and distortion occur. Sony ES is a lame attempt to make a high end product from a low end seen-at-Sears company and as usual, it can't even pass for a mediocre midfi product like Denon and Yamaha. |
| I suggest you give us some more info | Norm Strong Mar 10, 2001 3:46 PM | | You didn't provide any information on which to base a recommendation. We don't know what features you need, how much power--nothing. |
| I suggest you give us some more info | kenzie Mar 12, 2001 9:02 AM | | primarily for ht, i am going to be using energy encore speakers
looking for dd and dts decoding,100w x 5,i really do not use any of the sound modes ie hall, rock, jazz, etc...,reliabilty, ease of use, |
| I suggest you give us some more info | Norm Strong Mar 12, 2001 8:42 PM | | I don't see anything there that would rule out the Kenwood VR-410, which is available pretty cheaply right now, because the new models are coming out. I'll bet you can get one for $300. |
| re: Help with choosing a receiver | Larry Mar 10, 2001 7:59 PM | | i have the HTR 5250 and love it..easy to use...can't imagine spending a lot more than the $359 I did and really hearing a difference... |
| re: Help with choosing a receiver | TB2 Mar 13, 2001 9:38 AM | | I would go with the 5280 out of those choices. I like Denon, but they are a problem waiting to happen. Don't believe me, go to www.ubid.com and see how many refurb units they have of Denon's.
My favorite receiver choices are Yamaha, Marantz, and the older Sony stuff...not this new "V-crap." A really nice receiver is the STR--DA777ES...discontinued so you can get it cheaper and it is a beast. It does all you want it to do..nice and sturdy. I also like the Marantz SR-7000 or the higher models. As far as Yamaha..not as familiar, but I like the 5280 and the higher lines. I would suggest you bring one of each home and check it out. In my opinion in that price range there is not going to be that much discernable difference. My only suggestion is NOT Denon....they are going to the way of refurb units b/c of obvious poor quality control issues. Of course, saying this there will be plenty of rufians wanting to cyber fight me on this issue, so take it for what it is worth.
Cheers. |
