Upgrading to seperatesBillC1022

I want to upgrade my my Sony AV receiver to seperate components. I'll continue to use the Sony (temporarily) as a pre-amp / controller. I have Paradigm Studio 60's with a Studio CC up front and Micros as surrounds. I'm looking for a used or demo 5 channel power amp for around $500. Any recommendations as far as brand / model would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Bill

If you had around $2,500 to spend on seperates then it wound be worth it but if you're only planning on spending $500 for a 5ch amp and lets say $1,000 on a pre/pro then I think I'd stick with a good receiver in the $1,000-$1,500 range. If you're wanting better 2ch stereo then you can always get a good $1000-$1,500 integrated and use a switchbox like the one Niles Audio has to share your Studio 60's between the receiver and a integrated or seperate 2ch amp/pre combo....
If you're set on HT seperates then take a look at NAD, Adcom, Anthem, Outlaw and Rotel. You might luck up and find one used around $500...

They are tube amps. Each mono-block is a 1 channel power amp that would drive your speakers individually.

I'm looking into buying them...a number of individuals including Paul have liked the performance/price ratio. Thay appear to be an outstanding value.

Thanks RGA,
The ASL's look interesting. Forgive my ignorance, but can you explain to me why most of the amps I've been looking at are 85 - 125 wpc, and the ASL's are 8-10 watts? Are all watts not created equal?
Thanks again,
Bill

You can get a used Rotel RB-985 5 channel amp for around $500. I bought one and use my Yamaha as a pre-amp. I too have Studio 60's. The Rotel did make a difference. The sound is more dynamic and can be played at higher levels with less distortion and less listening fatigue.

I've heard hat the ASL's are very good value. I can't wait to listen to them.

If tubes are not your speed(they're neat though) then try a 3 channel amp...and use your receiver to power the rears. The rear effects are not all that important and you can use the money to get a much better 3Channel amp.

Thanks RGA,
If I go with a 3-channel amp, what happens when I want to upgrade my receiver? With a 5-channel, I was just going to replace the receiver with a pre-amp / controller.

You would then need to buy a 2 channel power amp. This would be more costlyin the long run but easier to buy in stages.
