Amplifier question, need some advise pleaseJohn Winn

Hello all,
I just bought a sony 845 (forgot the letters) and it is rated at 100 watts x 5. Sounds pretty good, but two things I don't like about it, first it doesn't have on screen display (av stuff is behind doors) and the remote is stupid..LCD programmable thing you have to scroll down, ect..The guy at the store (circuit city)tried to talk me in to a harmon kardon, but it only had something like 70 watts per channel..Am I not understanding something right, but these more expensive ones don't have the power that the sony does or does sony use a different rating? The sony was 299.00 and the HK was 399.00, that is about the range I want to spend, any recommendations? Thanks a million!!! John

Well, there once was a time when companies began using creative definitions of power output. (Hey, they would't lie, would they?) But the appropriate government agency (thank god for big government), required that a standard be used. Because of this you can be relatively assured that watts is watts and that HK and Sony mean the same thing. (You can be more sure if you look at the details of the rating.) There is, however, something call "dynamic power" which is not the same as continuous power output ratings.

That said, there are several other factors that might mean that the HK can put out more power in some circumstances. Suffice it to say, you are unlikely to hear even the slight difference max volume that results from the difference of 100 and 70 watts. The difference is NOT 30% believe it or not.

I agree with the previous post. You can always replace the remote with a Pronto or something similar. IMHO, a 70 watt HK will outperform almost anything Sony makes, regardless of power rating. If you return the Sony, consider Harmon Kardon, Onkyo, Yamaha, Denon and Pioneer Elite - they all should have on-screen displays in this price range. Email me if you have any questions.
