Biamp vs. 1 High powered amp.Jeff Schmidt

I own a pair of JBL L7 speakers, and currently use a Yamaha RX-V870 receiver to power them.

I have been thinking about adding an amp for more adequate power, but I'm not too sure what I want to do. I'm thinking of picking up a Carver TFM-35 or a pair of Carver TFM-15's. The speakers can be bi-amplified and bi-wired as well.

There are really more options than I can list. Any advise would be appreciated.

One high quality power amp is better than two so-so poweramp biamping.

It has been a while.
Anyway, what would you suggest?

NHT 2.9 speakers driven by a Classe 300, 301, 400 or 401 OR
biamped by a Classe CAV 150 (150 w/ch) OR
biamped by the Classe CAV 150 for the high range drivers and the adjustable NHT SA3 subwoofer for the 10" woofer?

Hi - this topic has been discussed for many years. I say get a bigger two channel amp or two identical mono blocks and let the speakers and crossovers work as the designers intended. My reason is: different power amps have different sensitivities and when driven by a preamp, each will have a different output. The speakers also react differently to the power they're getting at different levels. The bass, midrange and high freq speakers will all react differently even if given the same input. I have a theory that I can't prove, but am glad to share. When biamping, there will only be one pinpoint on all the volume controls where everything will sound it's best. That might be the "sweetest spot" ever, but any other control position will not be optimum. To make matters a little worse, we all hear things differently. I suspect biamping was first used many years ago before the high quality, high power amps we have today were available. In those days we could only get high quality in lower power amps, so we used 30, 50 or maybe 75 watt mono amps for each speaker? Even then we drove them into distortion so we started using multiple amps for each speaker, then we could really put the power to them! WOW a whole 150 watts maybe? Today we can get 200/channel and up to "skies the limit" and the highest quality and best sounding amps ever. Whatever you do, remember, you have to enjoy what you hear!
