More on recievers vs separatesLarry Higgins

In a small room, like the one mentioned in Ralph's post, is it realy a must to have separates to get the best sound possible? I have a room not much bigger than the 12x9 foot room he mentions and my reciever plays the speakers I have very loadly. I don't beleive the reciever is straining to due this either for I am only at the 10 oclock postion on the volume dial. At this leval it is very load, as loud as I care to have it. It is very load but, it is very clean sounding too. So again why have separates unless you have a very large room or have speaker that are a heavy load on the reciever's amps. I have neither of these two situations.

Hi Larry - a few weeks back there was someone new to the "hobby" here and they asked the differences between preamps, power amps, integrated amps and receivers. I don't think the size of the listening area has much to do with what you get - all my individual components are in a relatively small room - 12x14. I won't put all I wrote here, but I happen to stumble onto a description that a lot of people seemed to like. I said that a receiver is like going to a burger place and getting a "happy meal." It probably has some compromises in it and every feature may not be exactly the way you'd like them. Individual components are like ordering each thing you like the very best from the menu. Please don't misunderstand - I'm not knocking receivers. There are some excellent ones around - it's just a matter of taste and how deep we want to get in to the hobby. The key is to enjoy whatever you listen to!!

Best thing to do is to take something like the Bryston 3b power amp home one weekend and find out - unfortunately what you hear to be clean now may become veiled and unlistenable after you hear the Bryston.

It's like TVs - Sony Vegas look great(and they are) but you won't likely notice the difference too much until you have it a while and then go back to a lesser tv - is the difference worth it...That all depends on you.
