Amp purchase advice, pleasespikew
Dec 27, 2001 10:09 PM
I currently have a Yamaha AX 592. I have had if for several years and it has been nice. I recently bought new speakers (Vandersteen 1c) which I love. I had the 1bs many years ago.

Anyhow, I'm thinking it might be nice to upgrade the amp. I have have a limited budget but I'm thinking of buying one of the three below:

Marantz PM-17
Cambridge A 500
Cambridge P500/C500 combination

I would appreciate any adivce you all may have on which you feel would be best for my speakers. Also, I have never gone the split route would I really see a notice able difference between the A500 and the P/C 500? The A500 would be cheaper and has slighly more power. Both pluses as far as I know.

Thanks,
Spencer

you will still need a pre-amp if you by the A-500, unless you are thinking of using the pre-amp section from your Yamaha(assuming you are able to do so), which is not a bad thought when you stated that you want to replace your amp. You will probable have just as many inputs and out puts with your Yamaha pre-amp section and the convience a remote too(assuming again).

I say just buy the amp. If you don't get the result you desire you can always add a sepeerate pre-amp, maybe even a tube pre.

I'm not sure what your price range is but I'd recommend checking out the VTL integrated. If its in your price range I doubt you will find much better.

First to gecko, The A500 is an Integrated, HELLO! hes not going to need a pre. And as far as which one to buy goes the Cambridge Audio i think will be lots better than the other one. I reccomend the A500, just to save money. And if you can stretch it a bit, Audio Advisor has a Musical Fidelity X-A1 50 wpc integrated that will probbly be better than all of them. You may also want to cosider NAD C-350 or the bigger brother C-370 which i have and really love. Or even the Creek 4430r i think it is. I think you will be pleased with any of those. And watch Audio Advisor's Clearance section thats where they have the MF, and sometimes i see the X-A2 which is 75 wpc and even better!
