| tube input stage | geckog21 Dec 28, 2001 1:32 PM | | here is a question; is a ss amp with a tube input stage the same as a hybrid amp/pre-amp ? or is the tube input stage just some tubes added to the amp to get the warm sound and a pre-amp is still needed. |

A device that contains both ss and tubes is a hybrid.
Whatever the design point for inclusion of tubes, it doesn't render the use of preamp unnecessary. If you need a preamp with ss components, you still need it with hybrids too. |
| ss, tubes, hybrids... | geckog21 Dec 28, 2001 7:14 PM | | my understanding of a hybrid is a ss amp section with a tube pre-amp(or perhaps vise-versa, but I have never heard of that), however a ss amp with a tube input stage confuses me, is this "input stage" a pre-amp or just a warm fuzzy for the ss amp, I am guessing is is the later. |

A pre-amp controls which source your using, the volume and such things. An input stage is a part of the amps circuit. as it's name implies, it handles the incoming signal and feeds it to the other stages in the amp. Hope this helps!!!!
