Troubleshooting: Sony STR DE305: Recurring Amp FailureChris P Creme

Hi Folks,
I have a Sony STR DE305 that has just broken down for the 2nd time, due to (I'm no tech) some malfunction with the digital protection circuit. The unit still powers up (bass boost light works), but the amp doesn't click on and the LCD screen is blank (where is should display the source: CD, Phono, Tape 1 etc.)

This happened while listening to a CD at conversation volume. I NEVER CRANKED THE AMP ONCE.

Last time it happened, I took it to an authorized repair place and they told me the Protect circuit had malfunctioned. They charged me $110 to fix it. I do not intend to have it fixed again only to break again.

Any ideas on how to fix this or am I just a big loser and Sony the big winner for fooling me into thinking I bought quality equipment?
Suggestions, comments, condolences.
Chris
