| Good Deal on Recievers... | poorboy Dec 27, 2001 1:37 AM | | I need some help on finding a decent receiver. I'am getting a pair of JBL S38 speakers that feature 175 watts with 45Hz-20kHz frequency response. So, i'am looking for a two channel reciver that will give a nice sound through the JBL's. I would like to spend $200 or less. I'am looking for a purely functional reciever that is new or used.
Thanks for the help. |
| Also... | poorboy Dec 27, 2001 1:43 AM | | Because of my budget i will have to wait on the CD player. I have an older mini system from sony that has a CD player and tuner. Can i run this to my receiver until i get the money to buy a Cd player, so i can at least listen to some music.
Thanks |
| Receiver on a budget | itellitlikeitis Dec 27, 2001 4:52 AM | | A long time ago, I was a poorboy myself so I sympathize with you.
You would do well to purchase a used receiver from a reliable source. There are many fine brands including Marantz (one of my personal favorites), Pioneer, Sansui. You'll get a lot more for your money that way. Because of the efficiency of the S38s power should not be too much of a problem. Try to get at least 40 to 75 watts per channel. Short of that, check for closeouts or deep discounts from reliable manufacturers. You can use your Sony mini system as a source. Hopefully it has line level outputs. These will have RCA jacks. They may say tape output as well. If this is not possible, use the headphone jack output and purchase an adaptor from Radio Shack. If all else fails, use the speaker outputs on the mini system but keep the mini system's volume fairly well down. |
| Thinking along those lines.... | Markw* Dec 27, 2001 3:21 PM | | Here's a site to keep your eyes on if you're into this. I've dealt with these guys before and will do it again.

| Good Deal on Recievers... I Got the Perfect One for You! | Reggie Jones Dec 28, 2001 9:43 AM | | I have a Pioneer VSX-9500S Receiver for sale at $150.00 plus fixed shipping cost of $30.00 (USA).
This unit is an extraordinarily versatile piece, particularly if you do a lot of recording between VCR's and multiple audio or video sources. Originally sold on the street at the $500+ level back in the early 90's. If you are interested, I'll dig up some literature on it and send it to you via e-mail. The receiver is in great shape cosmetically and operationally.
I accept PayPal, money order, or cashier's check.
Pleased to respond to any questions that you may have regarding it.
Happy New Year ...

| Tacky, tacky , tacky. | Markw* Dec 28, 2001 9:47 AM | | It's not really "kosher" to use these forums to sell stuff.
Why not try posting this on ebay or the classified sections here?
Besides, why would he want an obsolete HT receiver with only DPL? |
| re: Good Deal on Recievers... | that'samore Dec 28, 2001 3:13 PM | | I just went through this process for my son for Christmas. Narrowed my choices down to:
Onkyo TX8211 - $200
Denon DR295 - $225-250
Harmon Kardon 3370 - $250-300
Each of these models is 2 channel and rated at 50-75wpc. I went with the Onkyo because it was easier to find locally. It's solid and heavy with a 2yr manufacturer's warranty. Of course I haven't had the chance to listen to it critically yet. My 14 year old immediately hooked up the audio from his N64. All I've heard since Christmas morning is the James Bond theme and explosions!
The Onkyo and H/K models have phono inputs. The Denon and H/k's features make them more versatile than the Onkyo (unless phono is required then the Denon is lacking). You can find and compare all of these models at crutchfield.com. I was surprised at the limited number of choices for a quality but simple stereo receiver between $200-300. (Sorry, no suggestions on used receivers.) Good luck! - Tim |
| I found a refurbed Marantz SR-3000 (see above).... | atomix Dec 29, 2001 8:09 AM | | But the Onkyo is very tempting, over the Marantz, since it's specifically designed for 2 channel audio...The refurbished Marantz is $130, but it has features I truely don't need. I'm going to go have a look at the Marantz on Wednesday, if that doesn't meet my expectations, I'll take a very good look at the Onkyo. |
| I have an old NAD stereo receiver that's great ... | that'samore Dec 29, 2001 9:22 PM | | it's a 7225PE (power envelop), about 12 years old and still works amazingly well. It has an excellent phono preamp section for vinyl. Mine is conservatively rated at 25wpc which is fine in a small room but NAD made several of the 7000pe series with higher power ratings. I don't know where you would find one today. If you can't find a new stereo receiver that you like (there weren't that many out there within my budget that impressed me when I was looking except for the 3 I listed above) you might look for an old NAD on ebay or someplace like that. I would have suggested a used NAD to the original poster but I didn't know where to find one. For music the NAD is smooth as silk. - Tim |
| re: Good Deal on Recievers... | glenfihi Dec 31, 2001 6:15 AM | | Hi Poorboy Came across a new Sherwood rx 4103 model for 80 bucks at Circuit City. It has about 100 watts and discrete circuitry for the amp. Has very good weight to the unit as well. It did not come across like so many cheap recievers. glenfihi |
