Advice needed- Amp HumScrapiron
Aug 12, 2002 6:21 PM
I've got a B&K AV5000 Series II amp with a hum. It gradually builds up over about a 5 second period on startup. I've disconnected everything (preamp, speaker cables) and still the hum persists. I tried a different power cord (Shunyata Sidewinder), made sure everything else was off, tried a cheater plug, different wall socket... still have the hum. I tried the Monidal Magic thing for the cable, still the hum torments me. Is it time to take it in or am I missing something? Thanks-

Do you have cable TV in the same room?

I'll just assume you do: Chances are you will need to buy a device called a "Cable/VCR ground breaker feed thru surge protector." It basically grounds the cable that comes into your home. 90% of hums are caused by tv cable. The device costs $14.00CDN so about $10.00US.

www.soundhounds.com is where I bought mine from - they seem to be fairly scarce items - but man it did the trick...I though my Arcam was dying - was ready to sell it...now it's dead quiet.
