| Looking for pre/pro and amp best bang for buck | Relman Aug 13, 2002 1:33 PM | | I have been checking out the pre/pro and amps for a while and just what to buy instead of shop. Everytime I think I know what I want I hear a negative review or see something else that I start to focus on. I orginally was looking at the Marantz (AV9000/MM9000) then the Rotel (1066/1095) then the B&K (ref 30/7250) Now I ran across some reviews on the Outlaw (950/755). I started to check out the outlaw on their web site and read some magazine reviews. They seem to be a good company with good products at a fraction of the cost of say B&K or Rotel. My question is are they taking shortcuts to keep their prices down or does the fact that they are an "internet site only" really afford them to be more competitive price wise? I don't mind spending more if I am getting more but if I can get more and spend less I'd be happier. If anyone can give me insight on the Outlaw line I would appreciate it.
Thanks,
Pete |
| I'm going through the same thing... | Kyle Aug 15, 2002 8:38 AM | | As far as the Outlaw goes--obviously the price is really good, as is their reputation. To my knowledge, though, no one has actually heard a new 950. They are currently having a problem with the noise floor and the ship date for the modified units is 'whenever we get it fixed.' Could be tomorrow, could be a year from now.
My problem with Rotel is that there seems to be no analog bypass mode for music on their pre-pro, which loses you some flexability (at a higher price.) Obviously, the B&K is really expensive.
The bottom line, though, is what you hear. I'm on the waiting list for the Outlaw and when I get it, I'm going to buy the others (from somewhere that will allow me to return them) and audition them in my home. That's really the only way to know.
The other thing, is that you can certainly mix and match--getting the best performance for the money. |
| re: Looking for pre/pro and amp best bang for buck | Doug C Aug 18, 2002 5:03 AM | | I've had the B&K Reference 30 now for about a year. I purchased the unit for it's many bass management features: low frequency notch filter, crossover flexibility, test tone generator, speaker setup, etc. I had problems in my listening room with bad room induced peak around 38hz and the notch filter made a great difference. At the time I purchased my Ref. 30 I would have had to spend quite a bit more to get these same features in another pre-amp.
I am quite happy with the B&K. I am not famaliar with the Outlaw features. You can download the B&K users manual from their site to read up on all it's capabilities and limitations. I suggest you do the same with any other pre-amp being considered.
My brother has the Outlaw receiver and it's an unbelivable value at it's price. I think it competes with anything in the $1,000 to $1,300 sold through retail outlets.
Good Luck!
