| power anp or speakers? | bucjoe Sep 1, 2002 2:35 PM | | system: arcam A7r amp
technics sl-pg490
eltax titanium 1.3
pardgram pdr-8 sub
decks, mini disc and reciever too but there arnt important
i started off with a really cheep system and have gradually built it up. being a student i still dont have much money but would like some advice on which way to turn next.
what can i say, it sounds strained somtimes harsh with the speakers offering little bass. the sun offers plenty of the really low stuff but there isnt much "punch" before mid-range. i was wondering weather upgrading to some better, bi-wirable speakers is the way to go. The only problem with this is i have my sub wired up to the other speaker connections. :-(
Pre-amp is the other option (arcam alpha 8p probably)to get the most out of my speaker and be able to bi-wire them too. This seems to make more sense, but i dont know if it really the speakers that are the real problem.

What are the speakers, Technics or Eltax. I've never heard of Eltax...and Technics makes lousy speakers
Pardgram is unknown to me as well...do you mean Paradigm?
Chances are the Arcam is the strongest part of your set-up. Bi-wiring IMO is a waste of time...bi amping is a real upgrade.
Depending on how much money you have I'd invest in some speakers. But again my unfamiliarity with Eltax is driving my recommendation here. |
| re: power anp or speakers? | Mr Peabody Sep 1, 2002 9:16 PM | | At this point, your power amp is the strongest part or your system. You get rid of the weakest link, not the strongest. Arcam makes a great little power amp. Good sound quality and generally very fast & punchy. Pairing it up with an Arcam preamp would be an excellent move. But, if you are looking for what to do first, I agree you should upgrade the speakers. You can also play with your subs crossover point to see if you can tailor a more desirable response. Sometimes if the crossover point is too high the bass will be boomy rather than punchy. Or if it is already very low, you can try running it up some to compensate for the lack of mid-bass. I find that generally people tend to overdrive their subs. One other thing to keep in mind, a good system will give you just what was recorded, nothing more, nothing less. Meaning, your source will have to have a punchy sound or not much you can do to make it that way. Pick up Sheffield Labs, James Newton Howard & Friends, good kick drum action & one of the tracks on the disc was used as a reference for IASCA car audio contests. |
