Bryston 4B-ST counterfeit?Bill L

Hello all. Earlier this year I was shopping around for a Bryston 4B-ST and noticed an ad on Audiogon for a new unit in the neighborhood of $1700. This was from a Hong Kong source so a red flag went up right away. I noticed the shipping on the unit was 35 lbs. while the factory spec said 42 lbs. sans box. Hmmm. I passed on that. I did, however, buy a used unit via Audiogon. Having read all the reviews on it, my expectations were high. To my disappointment it sounded harsh and ill defined. And thats with a hybrid pre-amp and Vandies. I kept it for a month and sold it - no loss so no big deal. But I noticed that it weighed at least 10 - 15 lbs. less than another amp I have that the manufacturer specs as weighing 46 lbs. Did I get a Chinese fake anyway? The difference in weight and performance seems to point that direction. But it looked just like a Bryston externally, down to the (crappy) speaker terminals. Any comments?

As to performance, they all sound the same anyways, so you just need to drop your illusions and go beyond it. And as to the weight, you can prolly find some lead sinkers at a fishing store that can be used to get it up to the right weight. Let me know it this works for you.
Thanks!Bill L

Now, do you want to sell me some sinkers or will your tin ear do?
LOL! Best post here in a long time. n/tDerek416

This might explain why Bryston 4B-ST's are so common on eBay - Bryston should sue if what you say is true...Nowadays, I would not buy ANYTHING from Hong Kong, though the place had a good commercial reputation not so long ago.
