is it necessary to buy a headphone ampbriany8s

i recently bought an ipod and plan on getting a decent pair of headphones for it (grado SR-225). Is it necessary to get a headphone amp for best sound. Will it make that much of a difference? I plan on using my ipod mostly on the go so a big clumsy thing is out of the question. Thanks for the help.

If headphone is your primary listening tool, I think a headphone amp will give your more pleasure.

The iPod is a delightfully compact unit but a headphone amp will at least double what you've got to carry around.

First consider the headphones you want: some models won't provide the volume you might want without an amp, but then again most compact models will be OK. But depending on the 'phone, you might want to check out portable amps. The best place to start for both headphones and amps is Headroom who make a selection of highly-regard portable amps and also rate and sell a great selection of headphones. Consider their advice here ...

If you own a fine stereo amplifier or receiver, you already have an amplifier designed to deliver far greater power to far more difficult loads than even many pairs of headphones connected simulatneously would offer. Why on earth would you need to buy another amplifier? If it's good enough to drive your loudspeakers, powering headphones is a walk in the park. If there is no headphone jack, adaptors are cheap enough. IMO, anyone who would tell you otherwise is just trying to get you to spend more money unnecessarily.

The answer is no, you do not need to buy a headphone amp unless you don't have enough volume as things stand. Not being familiar with the Grado phones you're planning to use, I don't know if they are sensitive enough to run off the iPod.

I DO know that the Sony 7506 or the Sennheiser HD-280 will do the job without an auxiliary amp.
