| Moving to Separates Need Advice | jamesw20m3 Oct 17, 2003 2:15 PM | | I am currently using Sunfire Ultimate Receiver and finally am making the move to separates. I've looked at various systems and would like your advice. I'm looking at Anthem, Myryad, and Classe. My price limit is around $3000 so I'm looking at buying second hand. Please advise asap on these and other manufacturers.
Thanks

| I should have read this first | Mr Peabody Oct 17, 2003 9:38 PM | | I just recalled after reading your 2nd post what receiver you had and realized you are probably looking for a surround sound preamp. The Krell I mentioned is only 2 channel. My impressions of the other 2 amps are the same. In fact it was the AVM 20 preamp with matching power amp I heard. I was impressed because this thing is loaded with features and I expected the sound to suffer because of the price. Granted $3k isn't cheap but compared to what's out there and all it does, it actually is. I think the Classe preamp is also around $3k but they do not have any video switching and I'm sure not all the features. |
| re: Moving to Separates Need Advice | Mr Peabody Oct 17, 2003 9:28 PM | | You might also consider a good integrated, www.spearitsound.com is selling the Krell kav-300iL for $1,999. which sold originally for $3,200. in my opinion this integrated will sound better than any separates you can buy at $3,000. Out of your 3 choices, I haven't heard Myryad, I have heard Classe' and Anthem. Classe' is very good, to me it seemed very detailed and to present the soundstage in a polite manner. I would pick Classe' over the Anthem. It seemed more substantial, not as airy as the Anthem. Classe also has some very good integrated amps. The Anthem wasn't bad at all either. It was being played through Paradigm speakers which I wasn't familiar with their sound. I'm not sure which was the blame but the combo seemed to lack low bass extension. On the other hand the mids and highs were very open and extended. I could easily listen to Anthem or Classe, I just prefer the later. And would take Krell over them both in a flash. |

good luck,

| re: Moving to Separates Need Advice | rshad Oct 18, 2003 8:27 AM | | I recently bought a B&K Ref 50 pre with a Rotel RMB1075 amp and have been very satisfied with my purchase.
The B&K seems to be very a customizable and rugged unit with excellent sound quality. It also has the new Motorola chip in it.
I listened to the Anthem pre and I thought it sounded very good. I ended up going with the B&K, however, because I like the looks of it better than the Anthem. |
| re: Moving to Separates Need Advice | Paul L Oct 18, 2003 9:37 AM | | I assume you are talking separate pre/pro and poweramp in HT setup. I don't think $3000 can go very far if that is the budget for all channels. A good pre/pro alone will run you this kind of money and leaving no budget for poweramp. I suggest you use the receiver as pre/pro and slowly migrate to separate by replacing the poweramp section.
The Quad 11L does not need high power but need good qaulity power to sing. So, don't just focus on big name big power amp. I will even consider tube.

| re: Moving to Separates Need Advice | jamesw20m3 Oct 18, 2003 10:53 AM | | I guess my real question is about the Myryad pre/pro and 5.1 channel amp. I have an opportunity to get this system new for my price range. Of coarse, no tuner is included. The problem is no one in my area sells this unit, so I cannot hear it. However, it has great reviews. I would love to find a Bryston system used but it appears that's going to be about $1000 more. So any news with the Myryad such as sound in both HT and 2 channel, as both are very important to me. Additionally, is it quality equipment or is there a reputation of breaking?
Thanks
