| Amp Upgrade Choice | Sx Oct 19, 2003 10:22 PM | | I use a Yamaha entry level AV receiver for the 5.1 system driving five Polk speakers. I also have a NAD C541i CD player connected to the receiver.
I play stereo music a lot more than surround sound material and would like to play the CD player and the RTi 70 speakers to their full potential. My receiver does not have pre outs. Can I add a two-channel power amp to drive the front speakers? If not, should I upgrade the receiver to a basic one with pre outs and pair it with a two-channel power amp (or should it be paired with a 5-channel power amp)? Or should I upgrade to a receiver of the combined value?
Any input and suggestions would be greatly appreciated. |

1) get a speaker selector switch and quality integrated amp like a NAD or Rotel and switch between receiver and Amp to your mains. Use the CD w/ the AMP and the DVD w/ Yamaha. The money you save not upgrading the receiver would allow for more amp.
2) ebay the Yamaha and look for a receiver with 5.1 pre-outs, and 2ch amplifier. Though option 1 may sound better as receiver pre-amps are likely worse than integrated...not to mention this likely costs more $$.
3) ebay the Yamaha, buy amp/preamp and switch to 2ch at the expense of the your surround experience.
4) do nothing! |

I agree with psonic, your 2 channel experience will be limited by the receivers preamp section, seriously limited. I like the integrated amp idea. Get yourself a little British integrated like Creek or Arcam and you will be amazed. |
