| re: Phase Linear DRS 400? | Mr Peabody Oct 24, 2003 10:20 PM | | The only thing I know about Phase Linear is that they had a reputation of going up in flames for awhile then Bob Carver redesigned or had something to do with them. I saw one of the PL's he designed. I think it was rated at 100 wpc and weighed about 3 oz. They must have had a pro line or some version of the amps was alright, a DJ told me he uses some of their amps in his DJ system. Phase was out of business, have they been ressorected? If this is a used amp, I would shy away just because I have heard nothing good about Phase Linear. |
| DRS? I have a PL 400 but not "DRS" | Feanor Oct 25, 2003 8:29 PM | | My Phase Linear 400 was bought in 1978 is still working extremely well!
Very powerful: 200 wt/ch @ 8 ohms, 400 @ 4. The sound is clean and neutral. I very much doubt that there are any new amps with this power and sound quality that can be bought for the price of a the PL 400 -- and few used ones either.
It has a distinct "thumb" a few seconds after shut down, but this normal and won't damage the speakers. If driven very hard, it is advisable to use a cooling fan. When the unit was first out a lot of people used it for commercial sound reenforcement for which it was never intended: under these circumstances there were some failures due to overheating. |
