| Need Help Understanding?? | chaoticmustanggt Nov 8, 2003 12:40 AM | | Hi. I'm pretty new to hi-fi audio. I don't plan on spending thousands of dollars on speakers and the like but I want better equipment than department store junk. I am curious about a couple things. First, what is the difference between pre-amp and amplifier? Integrated vs. Power? Does it depend on the player? I am buying a Sony CDP-XE370 single cd player. I know I will need something to drive the speakers but I don't want a receiver because I don't listen to the radio at all and I don't want a home theater set-up. So I'm thinking I will need one of the many amps available but I don't plan on spending more than $150 on speakers and I'm not going for anything real loud. I have looked at the MTX Monitor 6" bookshelf speakers sold at circuitcity.com and they are given good reviews. If anyone has suggestions on either amps under $150 or speakers that are a good buy let me know and if you know of any good home audio stores online please tell me. Thanks so much. |

I might lean a bit more to the NAD models but they may cost too much.
Speakers are very limiting here with $150.00 budget.
I would highly recommend you go to E-bay or buy used. a Set of B&W DM 302s or DM 601S2 you might be able to get for $150.00 Maybe less. |
