| The Details | Mike Johnson Apr 22, 2001 12:13 PM | | Hi Chris-
Thanks for your help. I have a 10 year old Luxman amp. (R115) and the CD player is of similar age Onkyo changer CDX 606. The CD has an optical output, but the Luxman has no input for this. I am just looking to maximize what I have and thought that a cable other than the cheap patch cord might be in order. $50 maybe as my max if you think this will make a difference. Just so you have all the info I am using some older AR three way speakers that need some juice before they open up. I am thinking about replacing them, but am just starting to gather information. Thanks for yours help. I am just looking for any feedback on anything regarding my stereo. Mike |
| I might go with... | Chris Garrett Apr 22, 2001 3:58 PM | | some used cables of decent quality, such as the Kimber PBJs/Heroes, some lower level Audioquests or Straighwires. You could probably get them for under $50 for sure. Look for something with decent connectors that are firmly affixed.
You can't use your digital out on the CDP, only its analogues due to the fact that your Luxman doesn't have internal DACs--probably a good thing.

Thank you for your help. If I were to up my budget a bit, what would you consider to be the new cable that I need to buy? Maybe give me a couple of options in case I cannot locate one. I would like to be informed before I go into a stereo shop.
Thank you!

| I might go with... | Chris Garrett Apr 23, 2001 11:05 AM | | I just cruised Audiogon and came up with a pair of DH Labs BL-1 (silver plated copper) at auction for $45. I'm actually using a pair between my Blue Circle preamp and Cary monoblocs until my new set comes in. Not too bad for a $90 cable.
Caveat: I believe some cables make an audible difference in certain systems. I don't know too much about yours, so I went with suggestions w/i your price range.
There is a pure silver Homegrown Super Silver IC for $60 that might give your a taste of what this metal can do and yes...I've heard differences in silver vs. copper.
Finally, there is a slightly older Audioquest Ruby X3 that is $50 and although I don't use these cables personally, they appear to be well made.
I saw some Kimber Heroes, but they seemed to be closer to $100 rather than the $80 I sold my two pair for.

| re: Best Cable From CD to Intergrated Amp ?? | ChrisR Apr 22, 2001 5:07 AM | | Your best bet would be Monster M550i if you're on a budget, M950i or better Z1 would be my choice. Monster will be sonically different, no doubt about it. There's no sustitute for Monster, quality is premium. |
| re: Best Cable From CD to Intergrated Amp ?? | John Stalberg Apr 22, 2001 10:12 AM | | >>>Monster will be sonically different<<< Is different the same as good here? What if prefferences is no audible coloring? Wich cable are most correct? |
| re: Best Cable From CD to Intergrated Amp ?? | ChrisR Apr 23, 2001 10:50 AM | | the cables that the most correct are the one that will make your system sound the way you want. |
| re: Best Cable From CD to Intergrated Amp ?? | John Stalberg Apr 25, 2001 10:38 PM | | No, not always in the way I meant correct. If you want coloring, the cable mustn´t be audible correct(without coloring) or audible transparent maybe is a better way of putting it. John Stalberg |

I have grave doubts about this. You made a testable claim, didn't you?
Why should anyone believe you about this? |
| re: Best Cable From CD to Intergrated Amp ?? | ChrisR Apr 23, 2001 10:51 AM | | no |
| re: Best Cable From CD to Intergrated Amp ?? | John Stalberg Apr 22, 2001 11:18 AM | | If you are just concerned about audibility and want no audible coloring from the cables, cheap cables at any hifi store could probably do the job. Like radio shack(I don´t know for sure but i think this is a radio/hifi/TV super market in the U.S. Many referring to them without thinking about us outside the U.S. who rather go to a store in our local area;-)). If there would be a coloring from let say very long cables it probobly comes from to high capacitance. So I use cables with as low capacitance as possible. This doesn´t give me better sound. It is about meesurements. I like the idea of even improve messurable parameters even if they are beyond what is audible. It is like a theoretical improvement. But i must point out that I won´t go for voodoo parameters. Capacitance in very long cables are likely to be a problem. More than the inductance. For speaker cables it is the opposite. Here are inductance(and recistance) the weak link in very long cables. With very long I mean as long as it takes to cause audible distortion/coloring. For inteconnects I use mini RG-62 or RG 62. If you hear coloring from these cables using normal lenght something must be wrong with you other components. John Stalberg |

You mean Radio Shack doesn't own the world? :-) |
| I hate Radio Shack...!!! | estan Apr 22, 2001 10:49 PM | | I absolutely dread having to go into Radio Shack to buy anything. Generally the sales help doesn't know their arse from their elbow. The quality of much of what they sell is markedly inferior to anything acceptable for professional use. This includes their soldering guns and especially their branded solder. Their component parts are low grade with a rather poor selection. Their plugs and connectors are cheesy...no Switchcraft sold here!
Their cables are not spec'd so you really can't determine the performance when you do need to make a long run of coax.
You can't buy any decent test equipment...no Drake or Tektronix...
just junk.
I suppose it is ok for the casual hobbyist who doesn't need quality or won't pay for it. I will give them this...their solid core copper hookup wire is ok and their zip cord is the same as the rest of the junk available.
I buy my cable from suppliers who deal in lines like Belden, Gotham, Hubble, Ancor etc. I like quality...you cannot get this at Radio Shack. |
