| interconnect length and audio quality? | pk Apr 23, 2001 3:28 AM | | Hi all,
I've decided on buying a set of budget interconnects to run from my micro mixer to my preamp (under $30, no need to enter brand names into this question). The brand I've chosen offers only a 6ft. and a 12ft. version of this particular interconnect (dual rca to rca - they claim to be directional balanced cables, but I didn't think that was possible with rca connectors). 6ft would be perfect for my current setup, but if I ever move things around 6ft. might come up a bit to short to be comfortable (comfort = little or no tension on the cable and sockets). Will playing it safe and going with the 12ft. version offer any audible difference in audio quality? I know you can only have rca cables so long before the signal starts to peter out, and that shorter is always better - but how much better? I guess they wouldn't make 12ft.er's if that was too long, but would 6 sound noticeabley better?
any comments would be appreciated.
thanks for your time,

| It shouldn't, however... | Bruce Burke Apr 23, 2001 7:33 PM | | It's entirely dependant upon the capacitance per foot characteristic of the cable and your equipment's ability to drive capacitive loads, the latter being more critical in this case. You probably want to shoot for a capacitance spec of 30pF/foot or less. -Bruce |
