Whole Lotta MessNicky

The cables beinhd my system are a whole lotta mess. Is there a way to keep it neat? I tried to tie it together but my friend said that there will be interferences from the cables. And because they have different lengths, it's even more of a headache. Hope someone could give me some good advice.

I bought some of those velcro strips they have in computer stores for organizing my cables. They work very well and only cost a few dollars. Also, I've seen black tubes with a cut in them used too (pack the wires inside the tube). I think they have 'em at Rat Shack.

....just try to keep 'em as neat as you can. Never mix AC line cords and signal wires, try to keep them separate; parallel runs in close proximity are a no-no. AC lines should cross signal wires at right angles only.

You could try to replace the longer ICs with more appropriately sized substitutes. Keeping the signal paths only as long as necessary couldn't hurt.

Tight bundling should be avoided. Coiling-up the slack is also not a good practice, particularly with AC wires.

Resident Loser is right. In order to keep the AC off of the interconnects, never bundle them together, and if they have to go near each other a 90 degree cross is best. Use appropriate lengths so as to avoid coils, and to avoid unnecessarily long signal paths.

So how do you do all of this? Well here's what I did. My rack is 'two' wide. The components that have the power cord on the right side are on the right side of the rack, and those that have the power cord on the left side are on the left. This way all of the power cords are on the outside edges. The preamp is at the top in the center. The interconnects going from each of the components to the pre amp go up the middle at angles (since the preamp is above and in between), so there is some space between them. Since the power amp is at the bottom of the rack the speaker wires just run a few inches down to the floor, then under the rack, then along the floor to the speakers, (not going near the power cords).

thanks for all your advice. sometimes jones' idea makes a lotta sense, and pretty smart. like the idea.
